Sidney Lumet, the director behind American movie classics such as 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon and The Verdict, died Saturday. He was 86.

Lumet died from lymphoma at his home in New York City his stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel, tells The New York Times.

The film director, famous for creating art impassioned by social justice and satire, told The Times in 2007 that he made movies not as an attempt to change the world, but for his own love of the field.

"I do it because I like it," he said. "And it's a wonderful way to spend your life."

But his films, which painted portraits of real issues such as corruption and justice, did just that. His movies received 46 Academy Award nominations throughout his career. Although he never personally won the honor for Best Director ? which was remedied in 2005 with an honorary award from the Academy ? six of his films won Oscars during the peak of his career, between 1974 and 1976. Lumet himself was nominated for Best Director for The Verdict, Network, 12 Angry Men and Dog Day Afternoon.

Lumet, despite having a very Hollywood career, was a New Yorker at heart, and the city he loved was the backdrop for many of his greats, including Serpico (1973) and The Pawnbroker (1964).

"Locations are characters in my movies," he said. "The city is capable of portraying the mood a scene requires."

New York seemed to be his most constant love affair. His first three marriages ? to actress Rita Gam (1949-1954), socialite Gloria Vanderbilt (1956-1963) and the daughter of Lena Horne, Gail Jones (1963-1978) ? ended in divorce. In 1980 he married Mary Gimbel.

He is survived by Gimbel, his two daughters from his marriage with Jones (Amy and Jenny Lumet), his stepdaughter Leslie Gimbel, his stepson Bailey Gimbel, nine grandchildren and a great grandson. Vignette StoryServer 6.0 Sat Apr 09 14:52:22 2011

Charlie Sheen's Night at Radio City Music Hall

Taking the stage in the Big Apple, Charlie Sheen arrived for his Torpedo of Truth Tour at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan on Friday night (April 8).

Waving to his fans as he entered, the former "Two and a Half Men" star was in no rush to get things underway as he finally took the stage 30 minutes after the slated start time.

Among the highlights of the evening, Charlie ended up inviting "Two and a Half Men" co-creator Chuck Lorre to join him on stage for his performance coming up on Sunday night.

Talking about being fired from the hit comedy series, Sheen told the audience, "Of course, I want my job back so you guys can keep watching the best f**king sitcom in the world."

To close things out, the 45-year-old said, "I love you New York ... you're the best crowd ever. Well, some of you."

As for the feedback, audience member and "The Real Housewives of New York" star Kelly Bensimon told THR: "It's obviously a publicity tour because he wants his show back, but I'm confused. I'm not a doctor, but I think he's playing us."

Walter Murphy ? A Fifth of Beethoven

Walter Murphy ? A Fifth of Beethoven

Saturday Night Fever: The Original Movie Sound Track is the soundtrack album from the blockbuster film Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta. In the United States, the album was certified 15x Platinum for shipments of over 15 million copies. The album revived the phenomenon of disco in the US and was a national obsession. ?Every so often, a piece of music comes along that defines a moment in popular culture history: Johann Strauss? operetta Die Fledermaus did this in Vienna in the 1870s; Jerome Kern?s Show Boat did it for Broadway musicals of the 1920s; and the Beatles? Sgt. Pepper?s Lonely Hearts Club Band album served this purpose for the era of psychedelic music in the 1960s. Saturday Night Fever, although hardly as prodigious an artistic achievement as those precursors, was precisely that kind of musical phenomenon for the second half of the ?70s ? ironically, at the time before its release, the disco boom had seemingly run its course, primarily in Europe, and was confined mostly to black culture and the gay underground in America.? Chris Evans makes lots of mistakes.

The 'Captain America' actor - who has previously dated Jessica Biel and Christina Ricci - admits he often looks back at his past and is astonished by the way he acted.

He said: "I'm still only 29 and I'm making mistakes left and right. I'm sure there are plenty of things I've done that I didn't even realise I was doing at the time.

Now I look back and think, 'Man, Chris, what were you thinking? That's just inconsiderate or hurtful.' I mean, I'm just a guy, I make mistakes al the time.

The actor also admitted he feels "guilty" about a lot of things in his life, including his eating and sleeping habits and lack of political interest.

He said: "What do I feel guilty about? There's a list. I should read more, I shouldn't sleep so late.

"I'm half-Irish so I have a lot of Catholic guilt. I should ring my grandma more, I should go to church more, I should do more yoga and eat less sugar. I should follow politics more."

Jennifer Lopez tries to tell herself she is ''awesome and amazing'' to stop herself from worrying about negative comments or criticism.

Jennifer Lopez tells herself she is awesome.

The 41-year-old singer-and-actress believes confidence comes from feeling valued, so she always tries to stop herself from thinking negative thoughts about herself.

She said: "I know it's hard for women to tap into that feeling of self-worth. We need to get the message out that you are valued, you are a goddess and don't forget that.

"It's about stopping those thoughts of negativity and insecurity.

I think changing that and really recognising yourself triggers control of how you feel, so you're able to go, 'No, I'm awesome man, I'm amazing, there's nobody like me.' I think that's the big secret to body confidence.

Despite her positive outlook, Jennifer admits she can't help but worry about negative opinions and responses to her work.

She told Britain's Cosmopolitan magazine: "It's easy to let negative stuff get to you. I'm no different to anybody else.

"If I'm performing for 200,000 people and there's one person near the front row who's not enjoying themselves, it'll be that one person who's going to bother me.

"That's why it's important to remember you're special, so those messages register more than the few negative ones."
