Dr. Conrad Murray: No Plea Deal in Michael Jackson Case

Dr. Conrad Murray is reportedly adamant that he will not accept a plea bargain of any sort in the Michael Jackson involuntary manslaughter case.

Sources say Dr. Murray feels so strongly about his innocence that even a plea offering zero jail time would be out of the question on principle.

Not that the L.A. County District Attorney is bending over backwards to offer such a thing. Prosecutors believe they can and will win the case.

Dr. Murray's defense revolves around the fact that only two people were in the room around the time Michael died, those being Murray and Jackson.

The doctor insists he did not administer the fatal dose of Propofol.

His lawyers' theory: Murray left to go to the bathroom, a frustrated MJ woke up, administered Propofol on his own, overdosed and killed himself.

As for why he was providing Propofol to start with, Murray hopes MJ's last rehearsal footage will show "warning signs" that he was a lost cause.

Michael Jackson passed away two years ago today.

Deepak Chopra: Weekly Health Tip: Could Your Weight During Pregnancy Hurt Your Baby?

This Pregnancy Calendar is courtesy of TheVisualMD.com

Brought to you by Deepak Chopra, M.D., Alexander Tsiaras and TheVisualMD.com

There is probably no more important time to watch what you eat than during pregnancy. When a pregnant woman eats, she is feeding the developing fetus. It needs the right amount of fuel, or calories and the proper nutrients to make the miraculous 36-week journey from a few cells to a fully formed infant. Scientists have long known what can happen if an expectant mother doesn't eat enough calories. She risks giving birth to a baby that is physically stunted, has poor cognitive development and is vulnerable to disease. But recently, a new problem has come to light: the risks of consuming too many calories during pregnancy.

Risks of Excess Pregnancy Weight

Recent research shows that women who gain too much weight during pregnancy -- especially early in the pregnancy -- may expose their infants to a whole different set of health risks, including obesity, diabetes and future cardiovascular disease. The findings apply not only to women who gain weight during pregnancy, but also to women who are overweight or obese before they become pregnant.

Babies born to mothers with excessive pregnancy weight gain are heavier at birth, have a higher proportion of total body fat and are more likely to be overweight or obese as children, adolescents and adults. They are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure in childhood. And they may have an increased risk for cardiovascular disease later in life.

Research shows that the number of fat cells a person has seems to be set by late childhood and adolescence. Once the cells are there, you can't get rid of them, which is one reason why obesity is so hard to reverse. A recent study found that preschool children who were obese had double the risk of remaining obese as adults. For teenagers, the rate is 85 percent. Babies who begin life overweight have greater odds of becoming overweight adults -- and overweight adults have greater odds of developing cardiovascular disease. In addition, some research shows that children born to overweight mothers have lower levels of "good" cholesterol -- and that may also put them at risk for heart disease.

Too Much of a Good Thing

Scientists are not sure exactly how a mother's extra calorie intake increases the body fat and weight of the fetus. One possibility is that obese women behave like diabetic women in the way they process glucose (sugar) and insulin. That may cause their infants to have extra body fat at birth, just as babies of diabetic mothers do. Another possibility is that excessive nourishment in the womb may affect the hormonal and metabolic environment of the fetus and change parts of the brain that regulate appetite and metabolism. That could have a long-term impact on a person's body weight or insulin metabolism.

More research is needed to understand these mechanisms and what role genetics may play as well. But one thing is clear: Excessive weight gain during pregnancy -- or being overweight before becoming pregnant -- increases the baby's chances of being overweight or obese as a child. And that can have lifelong health impacts.

How Much to Gain -- And What to Eat

While gaining too much weight during pregnancy is a bad idea, so is gaining too little. The goal should be the "Goldilocks" option -- gaining "just the right amount" of weight. How much is that? In 2009, the Institute of Medicine revised its guidelines on pregnancy weight gain to address the issue of women putting on too much weight. The current guidelines call for total weight gains of 25-35 pounds for normal weight women, 15-25 pounds for overweight women and 11-20 pounds for obese women. All of this weight gain should come during the second and third trimesters.

If you are pregnant, discuss with your doctor how much weight you should gain. Also ask about diet and physical activity before, during and after pregnancy -- especially if you are already overweight. In general, you should follow a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. Cut out junk food and other empty calories and don't overdo the sodium. Make sure you get enough of some key nutrients that are essential to the developing fetus. These include protein which is critical for growth (aim for 71 g/day); folate or folic acid to prevent birth defects (800 micrograms/day); calcium, for strong bones and teeth (1,000 mg/day); Vitamin D, also for bones and teeth (600 IU/day); and iron, to prevent anemia (27 mg/day).

Finally, if you are overweight and planning to become pregnant, try to lose the extra pounds before you conceive. It will get you -- and your baby -- off to a good start.

DVD Extra: Chen Zhen avenges again in 'Legend of the Fist'

By Steve Jones, USA TODAY

The fictional character Chen Zhen has been a folk hero in Hong Kong action cinema ever since a nunchaku-wielding Bruce Lee? in perhaps his most iconic role ? took out a whole dojo of Japanese fighters in the 1971 film Fists of Fury.

  • Chen Zhen (Donnie Yen) prepares to avenge his dojo in 'Legend of the Fist.'

Chen Zhen (Donnie Yen) prepares to avenge his dojo in 'Legend of the Fist.'

Chen Zhen lives in Shanghai during Japan's occupation in the 1930s and is part of the resistance movement against the repressive invaders. His story has been retold several times over the past 40 years, with some of Asia's biggest fighting stars taking a turn in the role. Though the plots vary somewhat, the basics remain the same: Chen seeks the killers of his teacher, real-life hero Huo Yuanjia, who defended Chinese honor in public bouts against foreign fighters until he was mysteriously poisoned to death. Chen's vengeful quest leaves a long trail of bodies as bad guys are dispatched in dizzying displays of martial arts skill.

The latest addition to the character's legacy is noirish Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen (2010, Well Go USA Entertainment, not rated, $25; Blu-ray, $33), which had a limited run in U.S. theaters in April. It's directed by Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) and stars Donnie Yen, whose chain-lightning moves make the action sequences exhilarating.

Yen starred in a 30-episode TV remake of the Bruce Lee film in 1995. (Jet Li portrayed the character in 1994's Fist of Legend and also played Huo in 2006's Fearless.) This movie picks up seven years from where the TV series left off. Chen Zhen, who was believed dead, returns to Shanghai under the guise of a rich playboy.

He becomes manager of the gaudy nightclub Casablanca and ingratiates himself with its Triad-connected owner (Anthony Wong). The place is awash in betrayals and subterfuge. American, French and British businessmen, Japanese spies and resistance supporters all vie to protect or advance their various interests. Chen becomes infatuated with the club's sexy singing star, Kiki (Qi Shu), who may not be what she seems.

At night, he dons the black leather costume of a movie hero, the Masked Warrior (like something The Green Hornet's Kato would wear), and tries to protect members of the underground, who have been marked for death by the army. There's triumph and tragedy, but ultimately he must confront the Japanese colonel (Ryu Kohata), who is not fooled by Chen's assumed identities. He knows the hero is the man who killed his father years earlier, and he's determined to settle the score.

The movie is packaged with a bonus disc that takes viewers behind the scenes during the filming of the action sequences. It gives an extensive look at Yen's blow-by-blow choreography of the stunts and fight scenes. There's no CGI trickery going on here, just a lot of precision timing, athleticism and flimsy furniture to crash through.

Tom Ford Disses On Rachel Zoe

Fabulous Rachel Zoe seems on top of the world lately. Her new designs are scheduled to hit stores in July and she is on cloud nine about her 3 month old son Skyler. But not everyone is as psyched for Rachel about her new son. According to Style Caster, designer Tom Ford was recently interviewed dissing on Rachel Zoe.

?If I have children, no one will know about it until the child is born. And no one will ever see the child because I certainly wouldn?t use it as a press tool. If I have a child, you?ll see and notice that I had a child. Maybe you?ll see it when it?s 18, but I will keep it out of the spotlight. I wouldn?t use it as a press tool, as some people I know have recently.?

PHOTOS: Rachel Zoe Attends Event Looking Fabulous

Seen here, Rachel Zoe takes baby Skyler in the special edition Missoni Bugaboo Stroller, shopping in Beverly Hills, California on June 24th. I love that Zoe can wear a pair of gray sweatpants and accessorize with a bulky necklace and it looks completely fabulous. Rachel looks very content and happy. I wish we could say the same for grumpy old Tom Ford!
