Kate Middleton Evening Gown: Simply Stunning

Having married Prince William earlier Friday in the wedding of the millennium, Kate Middleton changed into a stunning evening gown for the royal reception.

Like Kate Middleton's wedding dress, this gown looked nothing short of perfect for a duchess, and was custom designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen.

Burton said of her design experience: "Alexander McQueen's designs are all about bringing contrasts together to create startling and beautiful clothes."

We'd say that worked pretty well in this case, wouldn't you?

Sarah Burton added that in recent weeks, she and her team "worked closely with Catherine to create this dress under conditions of strictest secrecy."

Mike D, left, Adam Yauch, and Adam Horovitz, aka the Beastie Boys, will release a 30-minute video for Make Some Noise on Friday.

USA TODAY's music staff offers a weekend tip sheet of sound recommendations spanning the media landscape:

VIDEO

The Beastie Boys censored

After a long delay, the Beastie Boys are finally making noise again. On Friday, the 30-minute censored video of Make Some Noise, first single from the long-awaited Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, will premiere online on the websites for MTV, Spike, MTV2, mtvU, VH1, Comedy Central and Palladia. Also known as Fight for Your Right Revisited, the video's five-minute cut is already in wide rotation. The album, out May 3, was originally expected in September 2009 as Hot Sauce Committee Part One but was shelved when Adam "MCA" Yauch was diagnosed with cancer. Yauch directed the full-length video, a comical chronicle of the trio's past, present and future. ? Edna Gundersen

CONCERT

Want Britney's best tickets? Start early

Get those credit cards ready, Britney Spears fans. Tickets for the pop star's Femme Fatale North American tour go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. local time. The star and her scantily clad entourage kick off June 16 in Sacramento and wrap up Aug. 13 in Toronto. Ticket prices vary widely, according to Ticketmaster.com, from $27 for nose-bleed seats to $347.50 for the main floor. She might have jumped the gun a little by misinforming fans that Enrique Iglesias would open up for her, but no matter. She has someone who shares her love of all things stiletto and spandex: Nicki Minaj. "I'm thrilled to have the hot Nicki Minaj join me and Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo will get everyone on the dance floor," Spears says on her website. "Can't wait to take the Femme Fatales on the road." ? Korina Lopez.

DIGITAL ALBUM

The royal download

Couldn't score an invite to William and Kate's wedding service? No worries: Decca Records will make the ceremony ? the audio portion, at least ? accessible just hours after the prince and his bride exchange vows Friday. The Royal Wedding: The Official Album will be available later the same day at iTunes and other digital retailers, featuring performances by the Choir of Westminster Abbey, the Royal Chapel Choir, the London Chamber Orchestra and the Fanfare Team from the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. A physical version of the album, out May 10, will also include a collector's booklet recounting the service through readings, vows and hymns. ? Elysa Gardner

BOOK

Tales of the guitar icons

Before Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, et al., came to be considered guitar gods, they were young guns turning music on its ear. Guitar Player Presents: Guitar Heroes of the '70s (Backbeat Books, $15) takes you back to when they were still ascending to the rock pantheon. The 250-page book, edited by Guitar Player editor in chief Michael Molenda, republishes 40 interviews the magazine did in the 1970s in which Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Jerry Garcia and dozens of others talked about their instruments and how they squeezed those sounds out of them. Each interview is presented with black-and-white photos, the magazine cover in which it appeared and recommended discs. ? Steve Jones

CONCERT

In tune with Maroon 5, Train

Fans of tightly crafted, highly polished pop-rock get a two-for-one deal this summer. Once Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine wraps work on NBC's The Voice, his band and Train will combine for a co-headlining tour kicking off July 22 in Chula Vista, Calif. The value gets even better with the opening act: Gavin DeGraw opens the tour's first leg, and Matt Nathanson replaces him starting Aug. 28. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday morning. ? Help for Startups! A Semi-Complete List of Startup Accelerator Programs

This is a guest post by Rob Shedd, VP of Product and Technology for Three Screen Games, who is actively involved with the Lion Launch Pad, an accelerator program for student entrepreneurs at Penn State.  You can read the original article here.

This is a post I've had a running draft of for some time. I'm happy to be getting it out of my draft bin and out onto the web!

Josh Kopelman of First Round Capital spoke at DreamIt Ventures this summer. During his talk, Josh mentioned how he expects to see an increasing number of DreamIt/TechStars/Y Combinator-style locally-focused "seed stage startup accelerator" programs in the coming years.

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. Between the research that led to the founding of the Lion Launch Pad at Penn State and my research into startup accelerator programs before joining DreamIt Ventures this summer, I've talked with / read about a number of programs.

But I wasn't really sure how many programs were out there, nor have I been able to find a comprehensive list anywhere else. The programs certainly don't all operate in the same fashion, so there is a lot of diversity as far as terms and offerings, but in general, I think everyone can agree that it's a good thing for startups that so many are taking an interest around the globe in helping early stage ventures get off the group and take flight.

So, here is the list I've been compiling ? I'm sure I'm forgetting a few ? what else is out there?

On the verge: Young the Giant

By Pieter M. van Hattem

They're getting big: Eric Cannata, left, Francois Comtois, Sameer Gadhia, Jacob Tilley, and Payam Doostzadeh of Young the Giant.

Giant steps: With its fist-pumping beat and shout-along refrain of "My body tells me no, but I won't quit 'cause I want more," energetic alt-rock anthem My Bodyis shaping up as one of spring's best tension relievers. And that's exactly what Young the Giant had in mind while writing it, says singer Sameer Gadhia. The song, which peaked at No. 4 on USA TODAY's alternative airplay chart, came at the end of a frustration-filled day for the young California-based group. "Why don't we just jam something out, like the most ridiculous thing you could imagine?" Gadhia remembers the discussion going. "It doesn't even have to make sense. Just yell it out, because it means you're releasing your tension." Ten minutes later, he says, "the entire song had been created."

California, here they come: Bassist Payam Doostzadeh, 21, is the only native Californian in the bunch. The rest come from such far-flung locales as Canada (drummer François Comtois, 22), England (guitarist Jacob Tilley, 21), New Jersey (guitarist Eric Cannata, 20) and Michigan (Gadhia, 21). They met as teens in California and formed their band as a more-melodic reaction against the local music scene. "There were a lot of hardcore bands," Comtois says. "Because there was so little to do, you ended up seeing a lot of those shows. After a while, it was kind of tedious hearing the same thing over and over."

More than Jakes: Formed in 2004, the group was initially known as The Jakes, an acronym for the original members' first initials. When the lineup changed, so did the name. "It didn't really make much literal sense," Gadhia says. "But there was something adventurous about it, something imaginative. It captured the idea of where we were at the time in our songwriting process. It became the inspiration for all these songs that make up the album."

The big break: The group won a contest on music-marketing website Sonicbirds to open for Kings of Leon at a January 2009 concert at Chicago's House of Blues. "That's when things really started picking up," Gadhia says. That show piqued label interest, and the group played music showcase South by Southwest a couple months later. Young the Giant songs appeared on MTV's The Real World: Brooklyn and A&E's The Beast. The band ended up signing with Roadrunner Records, which released its self-titled debut digitally in the fall and physically this January (22,000 copies sold to date).

'My Body' and everybody else's: The group will head to Europe in May and appear at Lollapalooza in August. But it wasn't that long ago that the bandmates were playing college parties like Stanford's annual Exotic Erotic where, Gadhia recalls, the entire audience was wearing lingerie and underwear. "Everyone decided to come up on stage during the last song," he says. "People started spilling beer and alcohol on all the electrical equipment. By the end, everything shut off, but we were still playing and everyone was singing along."

Meeting a Beatle: During a studio showcase for a record label in Los Angeles, members of the group spotted several equipment cases stamped "McCARTNEY." "We were confused: Is this Jesse McCartney? Paul?" Gadhia says. "Then the guitarist runs in saying, 'Paul McCartney is outside eating lunch.' So we went and told him that we had been listening to him since we were little, and he was like, 'Good to know that you guys have good taste in music.' He was very witty."

'Body' works: For Comtois, one of the best things about My Body's success is that it puts bodies at the shows. "We'll show up in a place like Jacksonville, where we've never played before, and the room is completely packed," he says. "Granted, it's not a huge room just yet, but it's really exciting to walk on stage and have people who already know the words, who are invested in what you're doing. It's a nice surprise every time."

Daily News Editorial: Reward system for city workers adds up to $150 million and needs to be scrutinized along with layoffs, furloughs

L.A. CITY BONUSES

Los Angeles city leaders are currently in negotiations with workers, and the talk is all about concessions to avoid furloughs and layoffs. Some unions have already agreed to pay more for health care or for retirement costs. Others are still wrangling with the mayor, City Council and CAO representatives.

And during these talks, everything should be on the table and open for discussion - and that includes the millions of dollars in bonuses that have become a permanent, but rarely mentioned, fixture on the city's books.

As a Daily News investigation on today's front page shows, the city of Los Angeles spends about $150 million a year on pay classified as a bonus for one thing or the other. Yet, it's money that's never talked about during discussions about employee pay.

Some city bonuses are relatively modest - just a few hundred dollars - but some employees can boost their annual salary by as much as 25 percent.

Most people think of a bonus as a little extra something at the holidays or the end of a fiscal year as a thank-you from a boss to celebrate a job well done or a particularly lucrative year.

That's not how it works in the city, where bonuses are written into employee contracts. They aren't one-time, good-for-you boosts, but entitlements that hamstring the treasury during financial shortfalls such as the one that has shut down libraries on Mondays and reduced other city services.

Many of these bonuses started out as

needed incentives to find employees willing and able to do special jobs in a civil service system that doesn't allow much flexibility. But some bonuses, as the story points out, were created as sneaky ways to give raises without unwanted attention from the public or other employee bargaining units.

Case in point are the bonuses to police and fire personnel for basic job requirements. Police get bonus pay for having POST certification and firefighters get bonuses for being certified emergency medical technicians - both required for the job. It's like giving a lawyer a bonus for passing the state bar exam, or a doctor a bonus for attending medical school.

Whatever the original intent, the vast system of bonuses has evolved into a hidden entitlement that the city can ill afford. In many cases, bonuses are based on a percentage of base pay. When pay goes up, so do the bonuses. And many are also pensionable, pushing up the amount of post-retirement pay that an employee can expect.

The city is currently in contract negotiations with both the fire and police unions. And talk of compensation must include bonuses. To be sure, it's going to be a tough sell to employees who now consider this their base pay.

One place to start is by negotiating flat rate bonuses - that is bonuses that don't increase with the level of pay. That way there's no loss of pay, but just less down the line.

The other is to halt all but essential bonuses for new hires. It's absurd to keep paying extras we can't afford that are basic requirements for certain jobs.

The budget crisis has shone much needed sunlight on to public employee compensation. When bonuses cost taxpayers $150 million a year, they are too big an expense to be left in the dark.

Jennifer Lopez Doubles the Glitz for Album Launch Event

Making for a memorable entrance, Jennifer Lopez rode into The Grove in Los Angeles on a double-decker bus for the "Extra" launch of her "Love?" album release yesterday (April 29).

The 41-year-old superstar was the picture of celebrity glitz and glamor as she sported a strapless gold sequined jumpsuit and black peep toe pumps while joining "Extra" host Mario Lopez.

Jennifer wowed the already-excited crowds as she and a group of backup dancers let loose, waving, dancing, and laughing their way into the huge outdoor affair.

"Love?," the first record released by Lopez in four years, offers listeners fun and funky dance anthems and even two songs written or produced by Lady Gaga.

Charlie Sheen Pens Scathing Letter Blasting Chuck Lorre

charlienatalie Charlie Sheen Pens Scathing Letter Blasting Chuck Lorre

Charlie Sheen has blasted ?Two and a Half Men? creator Chuck Lorre in a letter after hearing of plans to relaunch the show without him.

Chuck Lorre plans on taking the ?Two and a Half Men? television show in a new direction, one that does not include troubled actor Charlie Sheen.

Charlie Sheen has lashed out at Lorre in a letter.

The letter reads:

?My fans may tune in for a minute, but at the end of the day, no one cares about your feeble show without me. Shame on you? A narcissist. A coward. A loser. A spineless rat. I?m out here with my fans every night (on my tour). The message is crystal clear; no Charlie Sheen. No show.

And that?s exactly what it will be for you? every Monday night, a no-show.

The ratings right now are not a fluke. It?s a big fat mess. A 2.0 demo? That sucks. Almost as bad as you. You?ve been warned ? no one cares about your feeble show without me. Shame on you. Not even a phone call to the man that put you on the map. The man that put 500 million dollars in your pockets.?

You?ve been warned. Reap the whirl-wind you cockroach, reap it.?

Whoah! Now don?t hold back Charlie!  What do you think of Charlie?s letter?

Elle - who has sons Flynn,13, and Cy, eight, with former fiance Arpad Busson - currently fits her work schedule around her family and is happy to work longer hours if she knows she is due to take a break with the children.

She explained to Closer magazine: "It's important my sons recognise I am a financially independent, fulfilled mother doing what she loves to do, but they always know they come first.

"Sometimes if I know I'm going to be spending a month on holiday with them, I might work longer hours just before we go on vacation but I don't mind and they don't mind."
