DesafioBrasil 2011 Now Taking Entries

This is a guest post by ona.kiser at Startupi, our media partner in Brazil.

Entrepreneurs from around Brazil can now register for DesafioBrasil 2011. This competition for innovative technology projects offers R$100,000 in prizes, as well as mentoring and opportunities for international level competition.

This sixth annual competition is sponsored by IntelBrazil, and coordinated by GVcepe (the Getulio Vargas Foundation?s Center for Private Equity and Venture Capital), with additional support from Microsoft, Derraik Advogados and Helice Consulting.

The winners of the Brazilian round will go on to represent Brazil in the Latin American round, and the winners of that level will continue to the Intel® Global Challenge 2011 at UC Berkeley in November. At all levels the competition offers prizes as well as media exposure and the opportunity to present projects to international investors.

Because of the expansion of the challenge this year, and the support from Microsoft Innovation Centers around Brazil, organizers are expecting more than 200 projects to be entered in the first round.

Accepted entries will receive support from the Microsoft BizSpark program.

Last year?s winners were Motofog, a device for pesticide application in hard-to-reach terrain, which can be useful in combatting dengue fever; VPI, which developed an innovative rainwater collection and distribution technology; Taw Itech, an interactive whiteboard software; and Pligus, a collaborative real-time multimedia system.

Intel?s support for the Desafio stems from their program ?Passionate for the Future,? which reflects their vision of the importance of developing new technologies and their commitment to supporting this in the markets where they operate. For 22 years Intel has been supporting innovation and technological leadership in Brazil to strengthen market competitiveness and local industry as well as invest in the development of human potential through educational programs.

The deadline for submitting projects to the DesafioBrasil 2011 is May 20th. The complete rules are available at www.desafiobr.com.br.

Hard Rock takes its memorabilia on the road

By Maria Puente, USA TODAY

The world's largest collection of rock 'n' roll memorabilia is largely the result of an accident, and it doesn't have just one home ? it's spread out among the nearly 150 Hard Rock Cafes around the world. But now the caretakers of this treasure-trove are taking some of the best items on the road for a free tour.

The Hard Rock International 40th Anniversary Memorabilia Tour starts Wednesday in New York at the Times Square restaurant. It will travel to 32 other cafes around the USA in an 80-foot-long double-wide truck specially constructed to exhibit 64 memorable artifacts once owned by rock's idols: their iconic signature guitars, brilliant costumes, handwritten lyrics, the clothes they wore on their album covers, the letters they wrote to friends and lovers.

Picking just a relative handful of items out of the 73,000 that Hard Rock owns was an achievement in itself and marked by good-natured arguing over what to include. Candidates were drawn from the cafes and from Hard Rock's temporary storage warehouse.

"We could make lists all day ? 'I insist we take this!' 'No way, we gotta have this!'" says tour curator and Hard Rock historian Jeff Nolan, a passionate fount of stories about the relics. "We got help from fans on our Facebook page who voted (facebook/hardrockmemorabilia.com). We gave them two choices: This one or this one?"

The result probably will make rock fans of all sorts go "weak at the knees," Nolan says, when they get a look at, say, Jimi Hendrix's custom Gibson Flying V guitar that he played at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 or read Janis Joplin's beautiful handwriting on a lovelorn letter to her boyfriend.

The very first piece

Hard Rock's first cafe in London was popular with Brit rock stars such as Eric Clapton. "He had a favorite seat, and one day he told (co-founder Isaac Tigrett), 'You need to put up a plaque with my name.' And Isaac said, 'If you give me a guitar, I'll nail it to the wall.'" So Clapton donated a red Fender Lead II, and a collection was born.

Buddy Holly's glasses

Never heard of a rock star with thick horn-rimmed glasses? Buddy Holly made it work. He was killed in a plane crash in 1959 that also killed Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson (it was "The day the music died" in Don McLean's unforgettable American Pie). "They are so identified with him, and yet for most of his career, he wore a different style, even tried contact lenses," Nolan says. "Then one of the Everly Brothers told him he had to rock his glasses, pick something over the top."

Michael Jackson's jacket

Adorned with 27 zippers and delicate chain-mail shoulder inserts, Jackson wore this red-leather jacket in the video Beat It, earning it immortality. Later, he gave it to a dying child, and Hard Rock acquired it from his family. "The best part is sewn inside the jacket ? a pass to a 1983 (Jackson pal) Liza Minnelli concert," Nolan says. Visitors get to vote one to five stars on their favorite tour items. "If this (jacket) doesn't end up being one of the five-star contenders, I'll eat my hat."

Katy Perry's birthday dress

The pop princess appeared in this balloon- and candy-cane-patterned gown in 2008 at the Latin American version of the MTV Video Music Awards and (minus the skirt) dove directly into a giant birthday cake on stage. "You don't know what it's like trying to clean a dress of cake and icing and fondant for hours and hours," Nolan says.

Steven Tyler's peacock days

Now he's a judge on American Idol, but back in the day, during Aerosmith's Back in the Saddle tour in 1984, he wore this stretchy blue-and-black striped shirt and pants with his trademark long, colorful scarf draping his microphone stand. The peacock still rules.

Justin Bieber really can skateboard

This particular decorated board was used in his video One Time. "Some rock fans will say 'What's going on, what's this doing here,' but if you look at the timeline of rock history, the (phenomenon) of teen fans going nuts goes back to Frank Sinatra and the bobby-soxers," Nolan says. "Teen idols have always served in that role." And if enough of the Bieb's tween fans turn up and vote, his skateboard could end up being a five-star winner along with Jimi's guitar and Michael's jacket.

Matthew Morrison has revealed he gets turned on when he watches women dance because it is so ''sensual''.

Matthew Morrison finds dancing a turn on.

The 'Glee' actor - who plays teacher Will Schuester in the TV musical drama series - likes watching women show off their moves on the dancefloor because he thinks it is so "sensual".

He said: "Dancing is very sensual. It's someone expressing themselves through their body. I mean, I get turned on when I see women dance."

Dancing is very sensual. It's someone expressing themselves through their body. I mean, I get turned on when I see women dance.

The 32-year-old star is currently single but if he wanted to impress a woman, he would invite her into his home and cook her a meal.

He explained to heat magazine: "I'm kind of a homebody so it would involve cooking. I make this mean chicken enchilada. Not too spicy, it's just right.

"And I'm really into crockpotting right now. It's like a slow cooker, so you put food in it in the morning, like stews and it gets so soft and tender.

"But it's great because you can put it in at some time in the morning and go to work all day and then you come home and your whole house just smells amazing. So I'd probably cook for her. Cooking and conversation - the two Cs. And a bottle of wine - maybe a couple."

Dancing With the Stars Semifinals: Did Kym Make It Back? And What Did Bruno Say?!

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

We thought it seemed impossible that Ralph Macchio was dancing on a battered knee last week!

But that was nothing compared to what Kym Johnson had to bounce back from. In addition to two dances apiece and one "winner-take-all cha-cha," Monday's Dancing With the Stars featured terrifying footage of the accident that sent Kym to the hospital just three days ago.

As they tried to execute a lift, Hines Ward basically lost his grip and she fell head first, with all of her weight and Hines' pressing into her. Scary stuff!

Somehow, Kym made it back in time. But were she and Hines the ones at a disadvantage this week?

MORE: Chelsea Kane: Sore, tired, no time to recoup

Maybe it was all those emotions that arose after Kym's accident, but her Argentine tango with Hines was the most believable of the bunch: intense, passionate and crackling with chemistry. He didn't take his eyes off of her, and the dance benefited, earning them their?and the season's?first perfect 30.

Their connection made Carrie Ann Inaba cry, and Bruno Tonioli compared the routine, out loud, to "good sex." (And we thought that would be his raciest comment of the night.)

Ralph Macchio?sporting a knee brace and perhaps treating one side more gingerly than the other, but otherwise looking pretty healthy?tried to storm back into the game with an Argentine tango, but he came off less like a smoldering lover than like a coldly determined executioner, according to Bruno.

Karina Smirnoff looked like an extra from Cats for dance No. 2, and that didn't help matters when it came to spicing up their salsa. Face it, Ralph isn't really the smoldering type, even when his bum is padded for extra effect, though he is an ever amiable partner.

Two minutes later, however, no one could remember the dance after Bruno made a crass remark in reference to Karina's costume?"A pussycat! Well, what is she?!" he protested after saying Ralph was "too rough" with his p--sy and the audience erupted in boos. Carrie Ann suggested that someone give her fellow judge a muzzle.

Later on, Hines and Kym's salsa was everything that Ralph and Karina's wasn't?most notably, cool enough for the club?and that was good enough for another 30.

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy?who fought like cats and rabid, swearing dogs backstage?were back in sync in time for their first dance of the night, the Viennese waltz, with Maks sweeping his partner around the floor like Prince Charming and Cinderella when they waltz off into the clouds. It seemed a little rushed, albeit graceful, but the judges observed that Kirstie kept up like a pro.

Last week's first-place couple, Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas, came out with something to prove?and they proved that it's never too late in the competition for the judges to pick a peck of holes in their performance.

Carrie Ann thought their Argentine tango "wasn't up to par" for this stage of the game, and they backstepped into a 28, having tasted their first 29 last week.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

They had to pull yet another sexy dance, the rumba, out of their hats later, and we thought it was one of the best rumbas this show has seen in a long time.

"Now that's what I'm talking about!" agreed Carrie Ann. Bruno got it right this time by noting that they struck the right balance between eroticism and romanticism to create the "perfect pitch."

And with that, Mark and Chelsea joined Hines and Kym in 30 Land. "Tonight, you have fulfilled your potential," Len said.

In the final cha-cha round, Hines and Kym topped Ralph and Karina in the first heat, and Chelsea and Mark beat out Kirstie and Maks in the second. Then Chelsea and Mark came roaring back to knock Hines and Kym out of first place by winning it all.

Here's how the leaderboard stacked up:

? Chelsea & Mark: 73 (28, 30, 15)
? Hines & Kym: 60 (30, 30)
? Kirstie & Maks: 54 (27, 27)
? Ralph & Karina: 48 (25, 23)

Another star will be eliminated Tuesday.

Who would you like to see in next week's finale?
