Kate and Pippa Middleton's family party planning business has struck a merchandising deal with pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Partypieces.co.uk now sells Bieber balloons, napkins, cups and even a £20.89 Justin-themed Ultimate Party Kit.

'We've got Bieber fever!' reads a statement on the website's newspaper, The Party Times.

'Teenage girls go crazy for Bieber. In fact, they love Justin Bieber so much that the pop star now has his very own party-ware.'

Justin is a big fan of the Middleton sisters - especially Pippa - and took time out of his world tour to watch Kate marry Prince William on 29 April.

'Congrats to William and Kate... and Kate's sister. She was a hit,' Justin, 17, cheekily Tweeted after the big day.

Ed and Deb Shapiro: Meditation: Not What You Think

However you try to define meditation, it's not that.
-- Swami Brahmananda

Through many years of being involved with meditation we have seen how easily people miss the point, mainly because they take the practice and themselves too seriously. Many "try" to meditate but their minds are so busy they get frustrated and quickly believe they are no good at it. Others turn into diehard advocates of a particular method or technique and become like a salesperson trying to sell a product.

Just like yoga, people want to own meditation and to believe that their technique is the best one. They give it a name: TM, Vipassana or Kundalini meditation and sometimes make outrageous claims of what can be achieved, but that is not the point. Meditation is not a technique -- being quiet happens by itself, not because of following the breath in and out, reciting a specific mantra or creating a visualization.

Teachers, through their compassion, have created the many methods and techniques in order to help their students to concentrate and focus their minds, to be one-pointed. No one technique is better than another; they equally give our monkey minds something to do other than drive us bananas. Many of the practices known as meditation are actually concentration; they bring the mental energy together so the mind is less fragmented. But this is not meditation.

Meditation invites us to stop, just stop, breathe and be. Just as with a musician playing or an artist painting, when we stop trying to make it happen something occurs, like the radiant sun that suddenly emerges in a cloudy sky. But because we try so hard, we identify more with the technique instead of allowing the meditation to reveal itself.

The practice of meditation easily gets put in a box: "I will practice now, at this time, at this place and in this posture, and I will do this particular method." But a method is simply an aide; it is not the experience itself. A hammer can help build a house but it is not the house. There is no doubt that through practice we can release stress and feel wonderfully peaceful, but genuine meditation is about waking up, where the mind is clear and free of obscuration.

This is not a mental process but an experiential one as meditation is an opening, a release of ego identity when all attempts to meditate, all striving, all doing stops, when there is no past or future, just radiant emptiness. It is being present -- fully aware and present in every moment -- and we can do that whatever we are doing and wherever we are. It is the freedom to be fully oneself without limitations or ideologies -- there is just this.

Deb's father, Richard, was on a Zen retreat where he was taught to temper his sensuality, not to give in to his senses or think of sensual things but to stay focused and single minded. While walking in the garden he then came across a pond laden with happily fornicating frogs. We think meditation has to be something special but true meditation is opening and expanding our perception, as if seeing with new eyes.

The technique becomes redundant when meditation becomes our natural state. It doesn't matter what the technique is -- when we drive to Rome the car is necessary but when we get there it is immaterial -- what matters is the attitude and awareness that we bring to practice. The teacher is also more important than the technique. They must be skillful, peaceful and clear, regardless of the method or tradition they are teaching.

The moon trusts that the world will continue to go round on its axis, birds trust there will be berries and seeds to eat, trees trust the seasons will follow in the right order. Until we trust that things will unfold naturally then we are slaves to our doubts, fears and neurosis, to the constant chatter in our heads that says we are useless and don't know anything. But we don't make the sun to rise or set. The planet is in orbit and neither we nor Jesus or Buddha or any of the wise ones run the show. Our job is simply to surrender to the moment.

Pippa Middleton's Day at the French Open

Starting off her week with one the the world's most watched competitions, Pippa Middleton and her friends attended the French Open in Paris, France earlier today (May 30).

The sister of the Duchess of Cambridge sported an effortlessly classic chic look to the star-studded match, pairing a basic black top with a black and white polka-dotted skirt.

Pippa, an avid tennis player herself, sat on the Court Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros, laughing with pals as Rafael Nadal defeated Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic by a score of 7-5 6-3 6-3.

After the match was through, Miss Middleton and her mates watched Robin Soderling's straight set winning effort against Gilles Simon.

Nation pays tribute on Memorial Day marked by parades, flyovers, flags

WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans from the nation's capital to Alaska marked Memorial Day with parades, somber reflection and even a climbing expedition in a holiday infused with fresh meaning by the approaching 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The National Memorial Day Parade in Washington honored veterans and America's war dead but also featured special tributes to Sept. 11 first responders, victims and their families. Also fresh in the minds of parade participants and watchers was the killing less than a month ago of Osama bin Laden, who masterminded the attacks.

Elsewhere, military jets thundered through the sky above New York after a wreath-laying ceremony aboard an aircraft carrier that's been turned into a museum, while hundreds of volunteers put small flags on the 25,000 graves at a sprawling military cemetery near Las Vegas. U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan also took time out to remember fallen comrades.

Along the parade route in Washington, children sat on parents' shoulders and throngs cheered the passing high school marching bands and floats of war veterans. Special guests included Medal of Honor recipients, astronaut and Korean War veteran Buzz Aldrin and actor Gary Sinise, a veterans advocate who played Lt. Dan in the Oscar-winning film "Forrest Gump."

Hamilton Peterson, who lost his father and stepmother when the hijacked United Airlines 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa., said the looming anniversary of the

terror attacks should serve as a reminder to Americans to be vigilant.

"Obviously, bin Laden's death is a highlight of the 10th anniversary. However, we recognize that future attacks are imminent and that, absent using 9/11 as a model for how to respond, all Americans need to get involved. It can't just be the military," said Peterson, 51.

Sgt. James Patrick McMichael of the Arlington County, Va., sheriff's office was among the first responders to the Pentagon and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder about two years later. He said that even though the anniversary was dredging up painful memories, it's still critical that the public never lose memory of the attacks - especially to make sure they don't happen again.

A commercial jet crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, killing 184 people at the sprawling Defense Department headquarters.

"Reliving the event is not something that I look forward to, but I don't think it should be something that's not brought up to the public," said McMichael, who attended the parade in Washington. "I don't think people should forget about what occurred."

The parade featured a Shanksville fire engine and a red, white and blue float bearing the images of the victims on miniature twin towers.

Seventeen-year-old spectator Zach Garrett recalled watching coverage of the attacks as a third-grader.

"Watching it on the TV, it was disturbing at that age," said the Alpharetta, Ga., resident who was visiting Washington with his family. "And here, 10 years later, this big parade - everybody's participating and everybody's on the sidelines cheering everybody on. There's a lot of patriotism here."

President Barack Obama participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington.

"Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we cannot ever fully repay," Obama said in a speech. "But we can honor their sacrifice, and we must."

In New York, Lynn Berat dressed her young daughters in matching red, white and blue sundresses for a the ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on the west side of Manhattan.

"I think it's important that they understand the spirit of Memorial Day instead of just barbecuing," she said.

Five Army Rangers stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state climbed Mount McKinley in Alaska, reaching the summit Friday night in honor of 11 Rangers from their regiment who have died in the line of duty. They planted a flag at the summit bearing the names of the fallen.

At the cemetery near Las Vegas, 87-year-old World War II veteran Bernard Miller was among hundreds who placed the small flags on graves.

"A lot of my friends are buried here," Miller said afterward, standing in a bright red jacket and cap with insignia marking his Marine service. "They've done their job. I could be there with them, but the good Lord doesn't want me right now."

U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan paused for Memorial Day services, with some praying and holding flag-raising ceremonies to recognize the more than 1,400 who have been killed in combat there since the war began a decade ago.

Obama plans to draw down U.S. troops in Afghanistan beginning in July, while NATO has committed to handing over control of security in the country to Afghans by 2014. For now, though, the war continues.

"We reflect on those who have gone before us. We reflect on their service and their sacrifice on behalf of our great nation," said Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Craparotta, who commands a Marine division in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province. "We should also remember those serving today who embody that same commitment of service and sacrifice."

'Marriage Confidential' exposes scandalous reality

By Deirdre Donahue, USA TODAY

Thanks to Arnold & Maria, everybody has marriage on the mind. Pamela Haag's Marriage Confidential is the perfect book club choice because it lets women vent on cheating husbands, betrayed wives and why people marry in the first place.

  • Pamela Haag writes of women stuck in Tom Sawyer marriages and the rearing of "royal children."

By Anthony Grasso

Pamela Haag writes of women stuck in Tom Sawyer marriages and the rearing of "royal children."

This personal meditation on the modern marital state asks questions instead of providing answers. It is also free of the inflammatory political and cultural baggage that usually accompanies the topic. Hers is the rare book a divorced parent can read without feeling he or she has personally undermined Western civilization. (Alas, it has no inside dish on famous couples.)

Haag writes about her own marriage, and examines other unions. If you have a low threshold for privileged young mommies whining about the dullness of domesticity, brace yourself. A mother of one child, Haag has degrees from Swarthmore, a history Ph.D from Yale and an MFA in creative non-fiction from Goucher. Her triathlete husband ? a devoted father ? does financial engineering for a commodities trading firm.

Fortunately, Haag's awkward depiction of her boringly stable relationship is just part of the story. Things perk up when she writes about other people's far weirder unions.

Her chapter on "workhorse wives" will inflame any mixed book club gathering because of questions it raises about feminism. Haag depicts what she calls "Tom Sawyer marriages" where exhausted angry wives tote the financial burden while relaxed liberated husbands pursue their creative bliss sans paycheck. The chapter about "royal children" is pretty intriguing as well. Modern parents fixate on their kids' well-being in a manner once reserved solely for the hemophiliac heir to the Russian throne.

Harper, 327 pp., $25.99

Haag leaves the most riveting stuff ? sex ? for the end.

With divorce so costly, some couples are exploring what might be described a more European approach to adultery, with a big assist from the Web.

Marriage Confidential won't make you stray if you're faithful nor sad if you're single. But it does make you reflect on modern mating habits. It's fun.

Cheryl Cole now wants to take ''time out'' from her showbiz lifestyle to reassess her career after her shock exit from US 'X Factor'.

Cheryl Cole wants to take a break from the showbiz world.

The 27-year-old singer - who was sensationally sacked from the US version of 'The X Factor' after working on the show for just two weeks - is now keen to take some time off as she does not intend to return to the UK version of the musical talent programme.

A source said: "Cheryl has admitted she's not thinking straight right now and everything is a blur.

"She hasn't stopped working for the past nine years - ever since Girls Aloud started. She's now looking at this as the perfect opportunity to just stop for a bit and take time out.

She's going to sit back, take stock of her career and decide what to do next.

"She's going to sit back, take stock of her career and decide what to do next."

Cheryl - who is thought to have been replaced on the judging panel, also containing Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul, by Nicole Scherzinger - reportedly did not want to return to the UK version of 'The X Factor' because she is feeling "fragile" about the sacking.

A source added to The Sun newspaper: "She just isn't in the right state of mind at the moment to go headfirst into a new show.

"She's all over the place, emotionally she's very fragile. Starting filming on Wednesday would be far too soon."

She has also become "un-contactable" after the event, with TV executives left in the dark about whether or not she wanted a job in the UK.

An insider told the Daily Mail newspaper: "Cheryl will not be returning to the British 'X Factor'. People have been trying to speak to her and persuade her this would be a good idea, but she's been un-contactable.

"She hasn't returned phone calls. And you can't exactly negotiate with someone who won't even speak to you."

Lindsay Lohan found fame in The Parent Trap in 1998

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, 24, has begged Britney Spears to let her duet with her on stage.

So will Britney, who's touring with rapper Nicki Minaj in July and August, say yes to the bizarre request?

?She hasn't said no to Lindsay,' a friend tells Now.

?She knows Lindsay needs friends, especially famous ones, and that she's just looking for a chance to have fun on stage and surprise some of their mutual fans.'

If you don't remember Lindsay's attempt at a pop career in 2004, you're lucky.

Her album Speak got to No 4 in the US charts, but the follow-up A Little More Personal was less successful.

Our source adds: ?Although they haven't spoken in years, Lindsay and Britney were close when they were growing up as Disney child stars.

'But once Britney got married and had kids and Lindsay's career kicked off, they grew apart.'

The pair briefly met up in 2006 when Lindsay joined Britney and Paris Hilton on a night out in Hollywood but they lost contact - until now.

Rest Assured, the Future of Enterprise is in Good Hands

When I run into (loud) teenagers on trains or shops I tend to worry about the future of our planet, but participating in a judging panel for the UK's best young entrepreneurial talent - NACUE's National Varsity Pitch Competition - has renewed my optimism in the future generations. The next generation of entrepreneurs is integrated, collaborative and as smart as ever. Social, gender and racial integration at its best: natural and unnoticed.

Hosted at the British Library in London, the UK?s premiere student business plan contest that attracted applications from across the UK was planned to perfection and delivered to higher quality than most startup and technology events we attend throughout the year.

On the grand final night an audience of 200 entrepreneurs, investors and corporate partners gathered to witness the UK?s most promising student ventures pitch for the National Title, £10,000, a business support pack and a golden ticket to participate in the Global Student Entrepreneurship Awards.

NACUE?s search began earlier this year when 40 candidates were selected from over 200 applications to compete within one of the distinct industry categories. All winners and leaders of their Industry Awards, 7 businesses went onto a gruelling pitching boot camp before taking their place in the May 10th Grand Final:

  1. Clean Technology & Green Business - Scrap Attack ? King?s College London
  2. Software, Internet & Mobile Technologies - Story Key ? Royal College of Art & Imperial College London
  3. Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) Ventures - Neo-Slip ? Kingston University
  4. Social Entrepreneurship - Charity Checkout ? University College London
  5. London Metropolitan Business School Leisure, Hospitality and Services - Miss COCO ? University of Glasgow
  6. Creative Industries - Circalit ? University College London
  7. TATA Blue Skies Award for Disruptive Enterprise - Little Riot ? Newcastle University

Uncompromising in talent or innovation, the pitches were strong and demonstrated the value creation potential of students to change industries, lives and systems. Both TheNextWomen (Joana Picq) and Astia (Simone Brummelhuis) were invited on the panel alongside Angels Den (Bill Murray) and BP (Europe VP Peter Mather) to evaluate the ventures against innovation, market opportunity and financial viability.

In what was a very close call, this year's winners were announced: the People?s Choice Award went to Neomi Bennett, nurse and creator of anti-embolism stockings application Neo-Slip, with pillow-to-pillow communications Little Riot founder Joanna Montgomery being selected by the judges as the National Varsity Pitch Competition 2011 Champion.

This competition celebrated the leading entrepreneurs and innovators coming out of UK universities. It was an evening dedicated to the celebration of student enterprise and was a testament to why young entrepreneurs across the country should be supported and celebrated.

Maria Shriver Spends Memorial Day Weekend at Beach with Kids

Memorial Day weekend was family time for Maria Shriver.

"Nothing could be better than going to hit up the Malibu house," her son Patrick, 17, Tweeted Saturday. His father, and Shriver's estranged husband, Arnold Schwarzenegger was spending time in Sun Valley, Idaho, but he flew back to L.A. by the end of the weekend, though on Sunday night his family dined out in Malibu without him.

Shriver, 55, also found time to remember those who died in the line of duty.

"This weekend, I'm thinking of all who gave their life, and all the families who lost a loved one, in service to this great country," she Tweeted Sunday. "You have our deepest gratitude and respect. God bless."

The mother of four turned to one of her daughters to find some fitting advice.

"My daughter once gave me a great Plato quote that said, 'Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle,' " Shriver wrote on Twitter Monday. "We don't know what is going on inside of most people."

She added: "On this #MemorialDay, when so many are grieving in obscurity or silence, let's keep that in mind. Be kind so many people are grieving." Vignette StoryServer 6.0 Mon May 30 15:06:34 2011
