John Tarka: We're Never Done

It's a popular consensus that improvement is achieved by evaluating, measuring your success, and then working to improve. These are simple steps districts and unions can take across the country in the movement for education reform.

Those steps are often talked about as risky. But in Pittsburgh, we've been forced to take risks to improve the chances for our students' success, and it's had a positive payoff.

So what did we do? 1) We focused turning adversarial relationships into collaborative efforts and 2) we are empowering our teachers.

Previously, we were mired in the old adversarial dynamic between the school system and the union, and it was hindering the progress needed for teachers, students, and the city as a whole.

We had come close to striking. The PFT and the Superintendent decided to cut through the clutter and sit down together. Instead we said: let's have a dialogue. Let's not dwell on the labor-management dynamic. Let's act as if our only constituency was education itself -- teachers, students, and the community.

While some might confuse compromise with weakness, the opposite is true. We know that real progress is never possible when one side is unyielding to new ideas and change or too afraid to address them.

Candidly, it wasn't easy. We had and still have disagreements. There were -- and there remain -- difficult economic realities. But continuing to have an open dialogue on these and other issues is critically important in order to be effective.

The PFT is also involving our teachers in a new collaborative process. We pursued ways to strengthen their role and tell the story of their impact outside the classroom and in the broader Pittsburgh community. We insisted they have a seat at the table in ways that were not done before. For example, 200 teachers were directly involved in creating new curricula, developing a new system of teacher evaluation to make them more comprehensive and fair, training their peers and participating in grassroots committees.

Why? Because nobody knows more about what's going on in the classroom than teachers do. They make a huge difference in the community and in each student's life.

The results from the PFT's new platform for teacher involvement -- and our commitment to open communication -- are undeniable. We've had a turnaround in Pittsburgh to be proud of. And Pittsburgh teachers deserve the credit for doing what is needed daily to restore our city's education system.

The re-energized dynamic in Pittsburgh was sparked by the PFT's and district's leadership, supported by the school system and empowered by the teachers. Other participants, including several community leaders, were also an important part of this success story including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which granted Pittsburgh $40 million dollars to make sure the support for teachers, their students and their futures continues to be possible. We are proud of this recognition.

We're also proud of the most recent recognition from the Aspen Institute, which just released a research paper chronicling our pursuit of an ambitious reform agenda. To read the full paper, "Forging a New Partnership: The Story of Teacher Union and School District Collaboration in Pittsburgh," click here.

Because of our teachers' union, education reform is happening right here in Pittsburgh, working for the people of this great city. Our work is never done, but we are proud to set an example for what can be achieved in other districts across the country.

Juliet Linley: David and the Dolphins

"We're taking Dave to Florida to swim with the dolphins," Tom and Mary told us when their son was just over 4 years old.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that such a vacation is a little over-the-top, given that at that age playing with a mere stuffed version of the mammal is fascinating in itself.

But Dave had just been diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). He still did not speak, and some of his behavior resembled that of an autistic child. Dave lived in a world of his own and appeared emotionally isolated, despite the efforts of his parents and older siblings (6 and 7 years old) to involve him in their games and in the family's daily lifestyle.

It was his Swiss physiotherapist who suggested that little Dave might benefit from Dolphin Human Therapy, given that DHT -- researched and developed by Dr. Dave Nathanson -- can help jump-start the learning process in some children with developmental problems. While DHT can treat most disabilities, some of its patients' most common diagnoses include CP, Down Syndrome, autism, spina bifida, traumatic brain injury, genetic syndromes and learning disabilities.

And so, the family set off for four weeks in Dolphin Cove in Key Largo, Fla. It was July 2005.

"After only five sessions, we put Dave to the test by taking him to a restaurant," Tom tells me. "He stayed seated for the entire duration of the meal for the first time in his life (usually he would get up and wander off). After 20 sessions he was more interested in other people, his behavior was less autistic, and he managed to verbalize much more."

One can book 10 to 20 DHT sessions, depending on one's financial means (the 10-session program currently runs at $5,400; 20 sessions cost double that amount).

In brief, DHT integrates the skills of an array of therapists (physical, occupational, speech, education, psychology), family participation, dolphins, warm water and a peaceful location to create a therapeutic environment aimed at maximizing each child's potential within a short period.

With individualized consultations for families, parents leave feeling that they are equipped with the tools necessary to implement strategies at home in order to continue progressing toward reaching the highest potential for their child. A series of individualized consultations give families the tools to help their child to continue progressing once they return home.

"Dave loved the dolphins and would play with them all day if he were given the chance!" says Tom, as he describes what a typical therapy session might consist of.

In his son's sessions, a group of about six children would begin with a warm-up in which they would sing together while bouncing on Swiss balls.

Then, working individually with a therapist, each child would have to answer questions, point to pictures or say a specific word according to the particular exercise. The lesson would take place on a deck next to the sea where the dolphins were. Diving in and swimming holding on to the dolphin's dorsal fin, or having one's feet pushed along by the dolphin's nose, were the "rewards" that the child would earn if he worked well. The sequence would be repeated until the end of the 40-minute session.

"The therapists are very human but also very demanding," Tom continues. "They are very good at educating and motivating the children. Actually, you cannot have education without motivation. They expect success with the children they treat and refuse to take 'no' for an answer."

Tom and Mary were so satisfied with Dave's progress that they took him back to Florida again after that. Last year a DHT centre opened in the Caribbean (Grand Cayman), so in April of this year, they took the family there. Now Dave is 10 years old, but the results keep coming -- slowly and without miracles, of course. He now speaks, in his own manner, and he uses sign language and a special computer. His behavior has become much calmer since he got back.

"It would be great if there were a therapy centre closer to home (we live in Switzerland), where we could take Dave more regularly," sighs Tom. However, they stay in touch by phone and email with the therapists, who are always at their disposal.

"Unquestionably," concludes this father, who is totally dedicated to doing the best he can for his family, "DHT is not cheap. But we strongly recommend it to anyone who has a child with disabilities. Even if it means making some financial sacrifices."

Finding the Wunder Women @NEXT Conference

This is a guest post by Jess Erickson of Berlin-based startup 6Wunderkinder

Innovation and discovery have always been primary catalysts for my exploration and travel throughout the world. Over the years of living abroad, I have met inspiring people from all different ages, ethnicities and social classes. Through these encounters, I was always awestruck by young entrepreneurs and their bright ideas. They often broke the conventional molds of everyday life and always created something entirely new, something original. They encouraged others around them to think outside the box and successfully bridged old and new worlds together. Let?s just say I?ve been inspired?

Several weeks ago, I attended SinnerSchrader?s NEXT conference in Berlin. Attendees listened to leaders, connected with like-minded people and showcased a range of different techniques on collecting and using data to advance the way we live and work.

Phenomenal people and love for data filled the empty spaces of an industrial Kreuzberg warehouse and left me excited for the days to come.

My favorite speaker at NEXT was Amanda Rose, Founder of Connect the Dots Foundation and architect for a movement called Twestival to raise money for important causes. Someone in the audience had asked her how she manages to survive and she responded, ?crashing on couches? and also providing consultation for tech startups on the side. Clearly, she is much more than just an entrepreneur and has really inspired me to reinvent myself and generate new ideas that can change the world.

You can dream up a better future or you can take action like Amanda and actually make it happen.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Katrin Schmidt founder of Gluteinfreiheit.org, a web portal that is focuses on celiac disease and a gluten-free lifestyle. On this site you can find various information on celiac disease, read stories about a gluten-free life, compare more than 700 gluten-free products and save money when shopping online. I think its great that health tracking has gone high-tech. Perhaps we'll see a gluten management app from Gluteinheit in the near future?

The Next conference really solidified Berlin as a driving force in high-tech innovation and entrepreneurial talent.

In the coming years I hope to see more female leaders within the tech scene who will have a greater impact on the professional world. Thanks Amanda and Katrin for paving the way.

Is Desperate Housewives Ending Next Season?

Desperate Housewives heads into season eight this fall, and someone might have let it slip that we won't be seeing a season nine. And it wasn't even one of the stars who spilled the info!

Instead, it was William H. Macy, hubby of D.H. star Felicity Huffman, who told reporters today at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival that she "has one more year of Desperate Housewives." Naturally, reporters jumped all over Felicity about his comment when they talked to her next. So what did she have to say about William's big mouth?

MORE: Laurence Fishburne Leaving CSI

Well, first of all, she was exasperated with her spouse. "Did he say I was leaving?" she asked incredulously. "Someone get me a phone!" Don't worry, she was feigning her angry attitude and happily set the record straight.

"No, that's not been decided yet, but I love that Bill is spreading rumors. No, we're signed up for two more years," she insists. "It depends on the ratings whether we'll actually go two more years or not, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. I'd like to go two more years. I love the work, I love working from home, it's the job of a lifetime, so I hope it goes two more years, but maybe it's just one more year. It depends on how we do."

So the answer to the question in the headline is...maybe. The cast is signed on for a ninth season, but like Felicity said, that doesn't guarantee the show is necessarily guaranteed a season-nine renewal. So, for now, let's just focus on the eighth season with some scoop on Lynette and Tom (Doug Savant).

"I think it's going to be tough for Tom and Lynette to get through this. I don't know exactly how they are going to jump over this," Felicity says of the duo's separation last season. "And I think depending on whether this is our last year or not we'll decide on whether they break up or not. It would be sad if they split, wouldn't it?"

Would you be sad if Tom and Lynette split for good, DH fans? And should there be a ninth season?

Eva Mendes gets restraining order against stalker

Eva Mendes has beengranted a restraining order against her alleged stalker.

The actress claims she has been living in "constant fear" of John C. Luna, who she says has been harassing her since 2008 and even turned up at her Los Angeles home in May.

Eva told a judge in court papers Luna believes he is in a relationship with her and has sent her "creepy" letters, cards and nine hours of "bizarre" audio messages.

In her legal papers, she states: "As a result of Mr. Luna's conduct directed at me ... including references in a letter that he knows I am willing to die for him, and his showing up at my house on May 31, 2011, looking for me, I am in constant fear."

She also added: "I do not personally know, nor have any relationship with Mr. Luna, have never had any personal communications with him, nor do I desire any interaction or communication with him whatsoever."

A judge has now ordered that Luna must stay at least 100 yards away from Eva and must not make any attempts to contact her.

Eva also wants him to pay her $8,550 legal bills and a further hearing has been set for June 20.
