Denny Hamlin Wins Martinsville Pole

Considering Denny Hamlin's record at Martinsville Speedway -- two straight victories and three wins in the last five races -- you wouldn't think he'd be too worried about whether he could hold onto the pole position for Sunday's Tums Fast Relief 500 after posting the fastest lap in his qualifying run Friday.

But winning the pole means getting the pick of the pit stalls, and at Martinsville the best one is first in line, right behind the exit line of the pits.

So as Hamlin waited nervously in the lounge of his team transporter while the rest of the field took their runs, he was. . . well, let's let him describe it in his usual frank manner: "I wasn't wishing bad luck," he said, "but I was just like, 'Slip, slip, slip, slip.'

"It came true for us. We've had to work extra hard today because we have worked just on qualifying."

The pole position at this tight, half-mile short track was "objective number one" for Hamlin and he and his team devoted all of practice to the qualifying setup.

Korea cancels F3 Superprix

The 2010 Korea F3 Superprix, due to be held on the weekend following the Macau Grand Prix later this month, has been cancelled. The one-off event, held originally on the streets of Changwon between 1999 and 2003, was due to be revived this year by Macau organiser Barry Bland and held at the new Yongam circuit, which hosted the inaugural Korean F1 GP last month. Bland was expecting a full 30-car entry for the race, with most teams and drivers treating Macau and Korea as a double-header, but Korean motorsport governing body KAVO has had to cancel the event due to Force Majeure.

Spotter's Stand: Jeff Gordon vs. Kurt Busch Tops Martinsville Drama

Maybe this is what NASCAR's Robin Pemberton had in mind in January when his "Have at it, boys" line became the buzz phrase of the 2010 season.

In fact, it may have been even better.

Sunday at Martinsville, Va., couldn't have been scripted more perfectly in terms of drivers leaving the .526-mile bullring irritated with each other and how the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship battle is setting up with four races to go.

Oh, and some guy named Dale Earnhardt Jr. managed to have the South Central Virginia crowd roaring for the 90 laps he led -- the most he's paced all season.

But Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch -- personalities who have little crossover appeal within their separate fan bases -- provided the most interesting episode.

Gordon's most recent history with Busch came a quarter-lap before the ultimate payback, but their past history this season includes a cut tire on Busch's No. 2 that left him steamed at Gordon after finishing 32nd on the Infineon road course in June.
