Porsche may have inadvertently given us our best glimpse yet at the upcoming production version of the company's 918 Spyder. The German sports car manufacturer has announced its intention to invest mountains of cash in its Weissach facility, and has released a bevy of images from inside the studio walls to mark the occasion. Tucked among the images of designers furiously sketching away and engineers toying with crash-test dummies is one very interesting shot of a 918 clay model. Of particular interest is that single, massive side-exit exhaust nestled behind the passenger door; clearly a different design from the double-stacked tips of the concept. Could this be a 1:3 scale clay of the future production car? Or is it just an older take on the 918 that predates the eventual showcar? We won't know one way or the other until the eventual production car makes its debut.

Porsche says that it intends to invest €150 million (around $202M USD) in its Weissach facility through the addition of a new wind tunnel. Additionally, the company plans to open a new state-of-the-art design center and what it calls an "electronic-integration center." We aren't positive, but our guess is that portion of the facility will play a big role in the Porsche hybrid program moving forward. Hit the jump for the official press release.

Cut rubber caused Vettel failure - Pirelli

Sebastian Vettel's tyre failure during the closing stages of yesterday's first day of testing in Abu Dhabi was the result of a cut in the rubber. According to Pirelli's investigations, the failure on Vettel's right-rear tyre on the approach to Turn 11 was caused by something the Red Bull driver picked up from the track.

Report: Lincoln skews volume toward urban centers, unnerves small town dealers

Lincoln

Lincoln has apparently had enough of small-town life. According to Automotive News, Ford's luxury brand plans to give its dealerships in metropolitan areas the lion's share of production moving forward. The company says luxury buyers are typically centered around larger cities, and as such, up to 85 percent of the company's inventory will go to its dealers in the 130 largest U.S. markets in the future. That move denotes a larger percentage than the company has used in the past. Needless to say, this makes those dealers that are out in the sticks more than a little nervous.

AN reports that the remaining 15 percent of Lincoln products will have to be split between some 500 rural dealers. With so many hands fighting for the scraps, it's all but inevitable that more than a few will go dark in short order. Lincoln says that nearly half of the company's 1,200 dealerships are located in smaller markets. The company says that it wants to close down around 200 of its top-market stores, and that some thinning will be required in other markets as well.

GM to hold open house tours of all 54 manufacturing facilities

General MotorsGeneral Motors is giving the public a glimpse into the company's inner workings though a series of factory tours. Each of the 54 GM manufacturing facilities in the United States are set to host open-house events in order to give everyone a better idea of exactly what goes on in the newly-public automaker's plants. Each of the facilities will choose a date for their respective event and invite their local community inside by the end of 2011.

GM say that it wants to underscore the fact that it employees thousands of workers in locations across the country, and that since 2009, the automaker has created or saved 7,900 jobs in 21 localities around the U.S. If you live in close proximity to a GM plant, keep your ear to the ground for the open-house time and date in your area.

A similar effort is underway for The General's Canadian plants. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Alonso fastest as Pirelli test ends

Ferrari completed its domination of the final Formula 1 running of the season, with Fernando Alonso matching team-mate Felipe Massa by topping the times in the Abu Dhabi tyre test. Over the course of the two-day test, the 12 F1 teams have had their first opportunity to try Pirelli's development rubber for the 2011 season. As well as being fastest, Alonso completed over 100 laps today, almost two full race distances.

GARAGE DIO

....Been thinking about doing a garage dio for awhile now. But didn't want the traditional backyard 2 car one or even a gas station style. After seeing a fellow modelers work with foam board I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm attempting to depict a 1920's era warehouse converted into a service garage during the late 50's - early 60's.......here's what I have so far.....

...the basic layout......

..I have some double doors at one end, a service door at the other, plus a couple of windows. Plan on having a small loft by the double doors and a car hoist by the windows.....
