Katie Holmes Celebrates Her 32nd Birthday With Dinner, Drinks, and Cardio

Katie Holmes held on tight to Tom Cruise's hand while out to celebrate her birthday with dinner at ABC Kitchen followed by drinks at Gemma in NYC on Saturday night. The actress, who turned 32 on Dec. 18, had a packed weekend in the city, including a trip to spin class with Tom before her big evening out and another gym stop on her own yesterday. Katie kicked off the festivities on Friday attending a performance of The Nutcracker with Tom and ballet-loving Suri. Since taking a break from shooting Jack and Jill, Katie's been checking items off of her shopping list, while Suri's been busy spreading holiday cheer.

Akon Recalls Meeting Michael Jackson For The First Time

Before recording 'Hold My Hand,' the two spent quality time together.

In 2007, long before Michael Jackson's death and everything that proceeded it (including the just-released "Hold My Hand" video and the upcoming Michael album), Akon met with the King of Pop in Las Vegas to work on a batch of songs, then intended for MJ's comeback album.

To date, only two of those songs have ever been released: a remix of Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " that appeared on the 25th-anniversary edition of the Thriller album, and, of course, "Hold My Hand." And with the Thursday (December 9) premiere of that song's video — and the pending release of Michael — MTV News went back to our August 2009 interview with Akon, to get the inside story of what it was like to work with MJ. And though the two men recorded "days" of music, what Akon remembers most about those sessions was getting to know Michael Jackson, the man.

"My favorite moment was the day we actually met, because I didn't expect him to be that cool," Akon said. "I expected him to be this diva — just hard to deal with, rarely speaks, got to send his message through someone else, you know? Because these are the stories you hear."

But, as Akon quickly learned, Jackson wasn't a diva — quite the opposite, in fact.

"So I'm going upstairs [to meet him], I knock on the door, his bodyguard opens and says, 'OK, he's waiting to meet you.' I walk in, and [Michael's] in this spinning chair, but it's facing backwards," he said. "So I walk in the room, but his back is turned, and the guard says, 'Hey, Mike, Akon's here.' So he spins around, like it was all choreographed — so, off the top, I'm like, 'Oh boy.'

"But as soon as he turns around, gets up, 'Yo, what up, man?!' and I was like, 'What up, Mike?' and he gave me a pound, we hugged each other," he continued. "He's like, 'Yo, I've been waiting to meet you for so long, this is a great honor, thanks for showing up, thanks for making the time.' And in my mind I'm like, 'You know, I should be thanking you for making the time.' "

And though "Hold My Hand" was born out of the sessions that would soon follow, Akon's greatest memory from meeting MJ was that initial meeting, when all his preconceived notions melted away and he got to spend real time with the legend.

"It was the craziest thing, because we sat down, we talked about Africa, we talked about my foundation, we talked about the music, we talked about girls. We had a great, incredible time that day," he said. "He was extremely funny, he told jokes, and he liked to have fun."

"Tron Legacy" is on track to turn the Disney sci-fi series into a money-making franchise.

The sequel to the innovative 1982 video-game fantasy flick snagged the top spot at the Friday box office. Jeff Bridges returns as a gifted programmer whose unexplained disappearance prompts his son, played by Garrett Hedlund, to venture into the computer world to search for him. The film ventured into theaters on opening day with $18 million.

Another visual effects extravaganza, "Yogi Bear," debuted in the top five as well, scoring the second-place slot. The CGI-enhanced revamp of the beloved animated Hanna-Barbera series, which features Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake voicing the picnic-basket-snatching duo or Yogi and Boo Boo, grabbed $4.6 million on Friday.

Debuting nationwide in third place is the pugilism drama "The Fighter." Mark Wahlberg's portrayal of scrappy Massachusetts-born welterweight boxer Micky Ward, which is backed by performances from Christian Bale and Amy Adams, nabbed $3.9 million on Friday.

"Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" headed into the weekend closely behind "The Fighter" with $3.5 million. The glossy onscreen adaptation of the classic literature series has pulled in an estimated $33.9 million since hitting theaters last week.

Rounding out the top five is the star-studded romantic comedy "How Do You Know." Boasting a top-flight lineup that includes Jack Nicholson and focuses on Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd who are caught up in an increasingly messy love triangle, the flick picked up $2.5 million as it headed into the weekend.

Check out everything we've got on "Tron Legacy," "Yogi Bear" and "The Fighter."

Justin Bieber Co-Signs Diddy's Album While Recording New Track

'Everybody, if you're anybody, you'll go get the album,' Bieber says of Last Train to Paris.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Tuesday evening, MTV News was on hand when Justin Bieber was discovered laying down tracks at Diddy's recording studio in New York City.

"In the studio getting creative," he wrote. "Just got to show luv to my big bro @iamdiddy and his new album 'Last Train to Paris.' "

Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, explained to us that the pop star had an idea for a song that he needed to "get off of his chest," and that Diddy's studio is like a second home for the teen superstar.

MTV News was spending the day with Diddy, who just released his Last Train to Paris album. Though the rap mogul hardly ever stops working himself, he jokingly complained about Bieber being too busy for him these days.

"Well, I mean, you try to get in contact with me through all my partners and whatnot, but you never really got my number, so you want my number?" the 16-year-old responded.

After an exchange of phone numbers, Diddy made Bieber an official member of Diddy-Dirty Money and gave him and Braun the group's official varsity jacket. "Go get the album. Everybody if you're anybody you'll go get the album," Bieber said endorsing Last Train.

"It's gonna be the greatest album you ever heard," he later added. "Everybody's on this album. Go get this album. We're out."

"I've missed the studio. Just making music," Bieber later tweeted. "Made some great records tonight. Now en route to see my big bro @usherraymondiv."

Bieber then went to take in Usher's show at Madison Square Garden, later tweeting, "big bro @usherraymondiv killed it at MSG tonight. ... I had to come thru and support #family."

Michael Jackson 'Hold My Hand' Video Tugs At Heartstrings

Posthumous clip mixes classic footage of Jackson with newly shot film of fans.
By Gil Kaufman

In addition to his flawless vocals and mind-bending footwork, one of the things Michael Jackson was best known for was his drive to create the most elaborate and cinematic music videos the world had ever seen.

"Billie Jean," "Thriller," "Black or White," "Remember the Time" and "Bad" are just a few of the landmark clips the late King of Pop gave the world during his 1980s and early-'90s hit-making peak. Which is why fans and critics alike were eager to get a glimpse Thursday morning (December 9) at the first music video in the singer's career that was created without his firm guiding hand and vision.

After teasing the clip earlier in the week, the official MJ site debuted on Thursday the full video for the stirring ballad "Hold My Hand," the first single from the upcoming album, Michael. The clip for MJ's duet with Akon is not unlike the first posthumous vids from the likes of other contemporary fallen stars such as Tupac Shakur or the Notorious B.I.G., in that it mixes classic footage of the artist performing with newly shot images of fans young and old paying homage to their hero.

It opens with a crowd of people standing in front of a large airplane hangar and unleashing a flood of white balloons as they say "Thank you, Michael" and "We love you, Michael," while a gigantic image of the singer in silhouette appears on the side of the structure.

If nothing else, the "Hold My Hand" video is a kind of MJ greatest-hits montage, intercutting images of the singer in his prime in some of his most beloved stage outfits with glimpses of children wearing the same garb, a young boy holding a red plastic heart in his hands and Akon dancing on a pure white background as MJ hoofs beside him.

As Michael begins to sing the first verse, we see a variety of different hands — old, young, holding babies, reaching up to the sky, down into a bathtub, etc. — as well as a series of women crying, the infamous glittering glove and a woman in a hospital bed seemingly dying of cancer, all intended to pull heartstrings and stir emotion.

It continues on like that, with most of the video consisting of shots of hands (some trailing a kind of glittery pixie-dust vapor) doing various things, children breakdancing and popping, and various images of angels, as the edits of stock-like footage of sunny skies, forests and adorable babies pile on so quickly it's almost hard to keep up.

Jackson, frankly, is hardly in the video, making sporadic appearances courtesy of some iconic footage of him in concert, a curious choice given the reported dozens of hours of HD footage shot of the singer while he was preparing for what was slated to be his big comeback tour in England last year.

The duet with Akon was recorded in 2007 and, as a message on MJ's site points out, "a handwritten note from Michael belonging to his estate indicated his desire that 'Hold My Hand' be the first single on his next project." After an unfinished version leaked in 2008, Akon recently went back into the studio to complete production on the track.

Instead of the eye-popping special effects and intricate choreography of the past, the "Hold My Hand" video goes for a simpler, more predictable sentimentality. Without Jackson around anymore to call the shots and push the video envelope, it also signals a quiet, uneventful end to a career of constant reinvention and visual ambition via music video.

In a statement to MTV News, director Mark Pellington explained what he was aiming for with the posthumous clip. "We shot the video in a variety of locations in Los Angeles, including a blimp hangar in Tustin. The attempt was to create a celebratory, positive, healing music video honoring Michael's legacy," he said. "And for me personally, if his fans like it, that's all I really care about."

What do you think of the "Hold My Hand" video?

Amy Winehouse Moving In With Reg Traviss

Amy Winehouse and Reg Traviss were photographed leaving the 'Psychosis' Premiere after party held at the Electric Birdcage in London yesterday evening. It's being reported that the singer is moving in with the film director. So much for Blake Fielder-Civil! A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper:
??She??s asked Reg to move in with her and he??s agreed. He has met all the family and is a hit.?
Friends say she Reg is a "calming influence" which is exactly what Amy needs.
??It??s been an incredible past few weeks for Amy. She has completely turned her life around. It has been a long time coming ?? and she??s been writing songs for what seems an eternity ?? but finally Amy is satisfied and believes she has an album worthy of a four-year wait.???It is very raw and very personal ?? it promises to be another classic. She is now narrowing down the material and hopes it??ll be on shelves by the New Year.?
I hope it's true that Amy has turned her life around - but we've heard "friends" saying this for years and it never ever sticks. Hopefully promoting this new album and having a steady relationship will keep her grounded long enough to deal with these demons head on. Outside forces are only bandages to her problems. Amy needs to figure this all out before it's too late.Photos by INF Continue reading

Avant-garde artist Captain Beefheart was given a heartfelt e-sendoff by several celebrity fans after he died Friday (December 17) at age 69.

After news of the passing of Beefheart, who was also known as Don Van Vliet, circled the world, a range of high-profile tweeters took to the social-networking site to type tributes to the late Magic Band leader and music game-changer.

Former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman and singer/songwriter Linda Perry wrote, "Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band ... RIP January 15 1941 - December 17 2010." She also included a link to the melancholic doo-wop track "I'm Glad" from the 1967 album Safe as Milk.

Comedian and illusionist Penn Jillette tweeted, "Captain Beefheart has died. Another inspiration & hero gone. He's been painting, no music for a while, but I still listen all the time."

Beefheart was close to childhood friend and fellow artistic original Frank Zappa, whose children shared tender missives via Twitter in the wake of his passing.

"Just heard about Captain Beefheart. Sad day indeed," Diva Zappa tweeted.

"R.I.P. Captain Beefheart...sad day," Zappa's son Ahmet wrote, before tacking on his favorite memory of the late artist. "Best Captain Beefheart moment. I was on the phone with him a few years ago and he asked me 'what about a platypus in a briefcase?' Love!"

Since Beefheart's entry into music and art more than four decades ago, his genre-melding approach has influenced a new generation of folk/pop appreciators and freak-flag wavers, many of whom paid tribute to the star on Twitter.

"R.I.P. Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart. We wish you safe passage and return," indie collective Akron Family tweeted.

"RIP DVV, my mum got me into you when i was 15. Lx," read a message posted on Scottish band Camera Obscura's Twitter account that included a link to "Call on Me."

Experimental upstart Zola Jesus tweeted about how Beefheart's music is still making an impact and being shared among young artists, writing, "Gave my brother my old, worn down copy of Trout Mask Replica before I moved as a thank you to introducing me to his music when I was far too young. Nothing he did was a mistake, there were no accidents in his music. Only sheer invention, passion... dear god, why does the world keep losing such important people? Who will fill their shoes? My heart is heavy for you, Don Van Vliet!"

Share your memories of Captain Beefheart in the comments.
