Gwyneth Paltrow: Bent On Learning Benefit Honoree!

Stepping out for a good cause, Gwyneth Paltrow was on hand for the 3rd annual Bent on Learning benefit in New York City on Wednesday evening (June 15).

Held at the Urban Zen Center, the Oscar winning actress worked the arrivals area before joining up with designer Donna Karan and Stacey Bendet.

Miss Paltrow's appearance comes as she happened to be honored during the course of the festivities for her ?immense contributions to the yoga community.?

As for the organization, Bent On Learning has a mission set "to improve the physical fitness and cognitive, social and emotional skills of New York City public school students by providing regular instruction in yoga and meditation."

A New Perspective On Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Mania, Hallucinations, and Delusion

A New Perspective On Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Mania, Hallucinations, and Delusion

www.bipolaradvantage.com What is unfortunate today is that far too many people continue to cling to the old belief that it is impossible to live a full life with a mental condition. On the other hand, a growing group of people are beginning to consider a life that is not restricted to a narrow range of experience. I look forward to the day when we all rise above the ignorance that keeps us in fear and denial of a better life. Bipolar In Order is based on a very simple premise we can learn and grow to the point that we see our condition as an advantage in our lives. Because this concept is often difficult for many people to accept on blind faith alone, I encourage everyone to simply begin by accepting that this new perspective is possible. To make this perspective a reality requires persistence, determination, and commitment. If you will give this perspective a chance, you will prove it in your own life. There are so many examples of bipolar ?disorder? that it is easy to understand why so many people try to avoid it instead of facing it and getting it under control. We can choose to view depression, mania, hallucination, and delusion from at least two different perspectives?either as ?disorder? or as ?in order.? Knowing that we have a choice of perspectives leads us to the understanding that we do not have to accept a diminished life. We begin to see what bipolar can be if we get it ?in order? instead of trying to make it go away. For me, Bipolar In Order is the greatest ?

Paul McCartney rocks in the studio, on the road

By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY

Paul McCartney hasn't had an idle year since The Beatles formed in 1960, and 2011 is no exception.

Paul McCartney has a new love, too: He announced his engagement to Nancy Shevell last month.

He supervised reissues of his first two solo records, 1970's McCartney and 1980's McCartney II, each in special and deluxe editions with multiple extras. Both are out this week.

"It's a lot of fun revisiting the past," McCartney says. "It's like looking at old snapshot albums."

He's not just excavating archives. Two days shy of his 69th birthday, McCartney is rolling out U.S. dates, recording pop standards and plotting a hard-rock record.

McCartney closed his Up and Coming world tour with last Friday's show in Las Vegas (Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon sat in the first row). He'll launch his On the Run tour July 15 and 16 at Yankee Stadium. Also confirmed: July 24 in Detroit, July 31 in Chicago and Aug. 4 in Cincinnati.

"We have a few dates lined up over the summer and autumn, some real nice ones that haven't been announced yet," McCartney says. "We always love playing in America."

Being on and off the road since March 2010 hasn't kept McCartney out of the studio. His twisted, shambolic version of It's So Easy, punctuated by his raps, is the runaway standout on Rave On Buddy Holly, an all-star tribute out June 28. Rolling Stone notes, "He yowls ? like he popped some Viagra, then set his pants on fire."

Holly, a huge influence on The Beatles, inspired McCartney to reach beyond the obvious.

He initially planned a "straightforward version, because it's a tribute, so I thought I'd be faithful to Buddy's version, which I love," he says. "Then I had the idea to try a crazy, funky version. It seems to be going down well."

McCartney's planned rock album is tabled until he finishes a long-postponed standards collection.

"I've wanted to do this kind of album for years," he says. But "I never wanted to look like I was jumping on the bandwagon.

"I'm trying to put a different spin on it," says McCartney, who has been recording with Diana Krall. "A lot of the songs I've just discovered in researching the project. Some are big favorites from family singalongs as a kid. Great memories for me, that. And I've written a few tunes in the genre. We're going all sorts of ways, and I'm having a ball."

With his crowded schedule, when does McCartney, who was recently engaged to Nancy Shevell, plan to squeeze in a wedding ?

"That would be telling, wouldn't it?" he says.

SNL's Fred Armisen Advises High School Grads to Stay Unique

Graduation speeches are usually full of motivational quotes and wisdom.

But when Fred Armisen is your commencement speaker, you get all that and some laughs!

The Portlandia star spoke at a high school graduation in?yes, you guessed it?Portland, at the Oregon Episcopal School this past weekend.

RELATED: Amy Poehler Brings the Funny to Harvard Graduation

He started off by recognizing practically everybody that could be in the room, and of course didn't want to be rude, so he also addressed the Royal family (just in case they happened to catch this clip).

We also find out that the Saturday Night Live comic only took the job because he would (kind of, but not really) look like he's riding on an eagle.

And since the graduating class was slightly under 80 students, Armisen used this as an opportunity to point out individual students' close calls leading up to graduation, such as using the wrong verb in Spanish or having a book still checked out in the library.

We're sure they were grateful for that little reminder, Fred.

Lastly, even though he very openly admits to not knowing what an electron does, the celeb does give some really great advice.

"No matter what happens, everything turns out great."

But that's not all! Check out the video above for more words of wisdom from Fred, himself!

Teresa Giudice 'Assaulted' in Bar Brawl, Says Attorney

Teresa Giudice

Teresa Giudice

Teresa Giudice and her Real Housewives of New Jersey costars have been accused of starting a bar brawl in court documents filed Monday. But an attorney for the reality star says the Feb. 23 incident in the Dominican Republic was an act of self-defense.

Adolfo Arreola and Jason Gomez claim in court papers that Teresa sprayed their party with champagne, then mocked Arreola's mother-in-law when the drink got in her eyes. They also allege that Joe Giudice and Albert, Chris and Albie Manzo attacked them "without provocation."

But an attorney for the Giudices tells a different story.

"They acted in self defense," says Jim Kridel, an attorney for Teresa and Joe Giudice, saying that after the champagne incident, words were exchanged ? and a member of the rival party physically assaulted Teresa.

"Teresa was hit and assaulted," says Kridel. "She is still in pain over this. This wasn't something that was minor." He adds that whatever his client may have said, "mere words are not provocation to hit someone. There's no justification for that."

Any resulting physical altercation with the plaintiffs, "was an act of self-defense," Kridel claims. "If someone threatens you, you can react with reasonable force. That's what my clients did."

Kridel also denies the allegation, in court papers, that the cast members brutally assaulted Arreola and Gomez.

"It's absolutely ridiculous that they were assaulted without provocation," he says. "These people are very litigious and they are looking for an opportunity to look into someone else's pocket."

Aguilera makes $225K per ep on 'The Voice'

Can't get enough of NBC's breakout hit reality competition The Voice? Well, The Hollywood Reporter has gathered plenty of fun facts about the show, including details about top judge Christina Aguilera's hefty paycheck and the show's connection to John Mayer. The highlights:

  • Salaries: Top dog Aguilera is ahead of the pack with a $225,000 per episode paycheck. The guys -- Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Black Shelton -- make significantly less: $75,000 per ep.
  • Birthing The Voice: NBC exec Paul Telegdy turned to Mark Burnett (Survivor) to produce a show that felt "like an arena experience for a music fan."
  • The Dutch connection: The blind auditions, where the judges have their backs turned while a contestant sings, was based on something Telegdy had seen on Dutch media innovator John de Mol's The Voice of Holland. "'Oh my God, how could we be so stupid not to think of this ourselves?," he recalls himself saying in a development meeting.
  • Room for John?: Host Carson Daly was the first person onboard, but casting the coaches was a little more difficult. Among the contenders on the list, the outspoken John Mayer.
  • What's next?: Aguilera, Green, Levine and Shelton are all expected to return for Season 2, but some structural changes will include more audition shows, more contestant backstory development and a possible tour and album, featuring coaches and contestants.

Ruth Bettelheim, Ph.D.: Gabrielle Giffords and You: The Truth About Brain Injuries

Pretend for a moment that you are Gabriel Giffords, about whom we are at last being told the truth. After 6 months of inpatient treatment, the best that money can buy, you can't speak fluently and must rely upon facial expressions and hand gestures to make up for words that vanish as you search for them. But continuing rehabilitation will not be available to you because your insurance won't pay for it.

Imagine yourself the victim of a serious brain injury: losing the ability to bathe yourself, feed and dress yourself, walk, and even think clearly. Imagine that the career you love will be lost, and that the people you once took care of must become your caretakers, unless you can get further treatment.

No effort or force of will can prevent your personality, relationships, and career from being seriously and possibly irrevocably changed.

Those are often the consequences of even a "mild" brain injury. Every 19 seconds someone in the US sustains a traumatic brain injury, and 90,000 Americans are left with long term disabilities each year. These alarming numbers do not include military personnel, tens of thousands of whom also suffer a TBI annually.

Unlike Gabriel Giffords, their inpatient rehabilitation ends after 6-12 weeks, not 6 months. They will be discharged the moment they can transfer from bed to commode and use a walker, even if they are incoherent and cannot take care of themselves in the simplest ways.

Once at home, visits to a cognitive, speech or occupational therapist are limited by insurance policies to 12 to 15 hours total. Ready or not, you are then forced to rely on whatever resources you and your family can muster. No one will pay for the years of therapy that your recovery would require.

Giffords may someday be able to return to Congress, but she will need a great deal of assistance to track details of policies and news stories, read proposals, summarize meetings, and write speeches. These high-level skills will take years to fully integrate. Most brain injury patients do not have their job waiting for them, much less the medical care, support staff, and cognitive, speech and physical therapy to assist them with that job until they are up to the task themselves.

Giffords's office has urged President Obama to require that insurance companies offer all brain injury patients the same continuity, quality, and duration of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services that are being provided to Giffords at taxpayer expense. Congress should mandate this coverage so that ordinary people with brain injuries, both veterans and civilians, have a chance to return to their careers.

It is a national tragedy for a gunman to shoot a US congresswoman in the brain, but it is a national disgrace that most brain injured civilians and military personnel in the US never receive the therapy necessary to recover any semblance of their former lives.

Dr. Ruth Bettelheim currently practices as an Executive/Life Coach in Los Angeles. She was trained at the University of Chicago and UCLA, and has been a practicing psychotherapist and lecturer, for over forty years. Geralynn S. Knorr, MS CCC is the director of Cognitive Rehabilitative Services, which provides home and community services in language, cognition, physical and occupational therapy in the greater LA area since 1985.
