Claire Gordon: The Rise of the Religious Left

There was something very befuddling about the recent campaign by the American Values Network, "Christians Must Choose: Any Rand or Jesus." It wasn't that the video bashed big-name conservatives for revering the atheist Ayn Rand, whose tome Atlas Shrugged is Americans' second most influential book, after the Bible. It wasn't that the American Values Network is part of a growing "Religious Left conspiracy", tangled in the tendrils of George Soros, Stalin, and radical Islam. It was that a Religious Left exists at all.

You wouldn't believe it watching the recent GOP debates, where presidential contenders (except for Ron Paul, that is) one-upped each other to prove their monopoly on God. Rick Santorum has "taken bullets" for unborn babies. Michele Bachmann isn't just pro-life for unborn people, but what do you know, pro-life for born people too.

A constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage? Almost every candidate says "ay!" "I was the coauthor of something about that!" chirped in Tim Pawlenty. "I helped author something else about that!" Newt Gingrich made sure to add. Potential candidate Rick Perry recently announced a National Day of Prayer and Fasting for our Nation's Challenges, a remarkable feat for the governor of a single state.

The Republican candidates may be out-liberaling Obama on foreign policy, but boy are they out-Christianing anyone who gets in their way. Listening to them, you'd be easily mistaken in thinking that religion and the right were a natural and eternal alliance, and that this alliance wasn't on a steady downward slide.

Already, the most religious groups in the US - blacks and Hispanics - lean overwhelmingly Democratic. In last year's congressional election (a crushing one for Team Blue), 60% of Hispanics and 84% of blacks expressed support for the Democratic candidate (compared with 30% and 9% for the GOP). Among non-white/Hispanic Catholics that number rises to 72% and for black Protestants, a dizzying 86%.

For most non-white Americans, the greater assistance for the poor and disenfranchised promised by Democrats trumps the more conservative strands of their faith. The current coupling of religion and Republicans is doomed by demographics. Blacks and Hispanics already make up over 20% of the American electorate, and these populations growing. Since 2006, 600,000 US-born Latinos have come of age every year.

But the greatest threat to the Religious Right are its own children. Over a quarter of Millennials (those born after 1980), and 17% of the population overall, are religiously unaffiliated. The trend of "believing without belonging" is sweeping the Western world, but in the US its particularly striking; the number hovered at 7% through the 70s and 80s, and began its upward spiral in the 90s. Today, only 18% of young people attend church on a regular basis.

Just as the Religious Right was a reaction to the libertine sixties (within four years, premarital sex went from demonspeak to leisure time), the "nones" (as Robert Putnam and David Campbell christen them) are a reaction to the Religious Right. "If religion equals Republican," write Putnam and Campbell, "then they have decided that religion is not for them."

It's not that young people have forsaken the Lord. Most consider themselves Christian and believe in life after death, but "more spiritual than religious" is the mantra of our cadre. We're also progressive, and don't think that various non-traditional family permutations are poisoning society. 70% of Millenials favor gay marriage, 94% are fine with or a fan of interracial marriage, 77% think pre-marital cohabitation is a-okay, 65% have no problem with gay couples raising children, and 73% think the world is the same or better when mothers of young children work outside the home.

So it's no wonder so many kids are skipping out on church. The religion offered to us by big-name preachers, and repackaged by conservative politicians and pundits, is wildly opposed to the values we hold dear.

It's possible that this is just a life-cycle phenomenon. As Millenials grow up, move out, get jobs, and raise the new wayward generation, church and hating on gays may become appealing.

But signs suggest that this is really a "cohort effect," a generational imprint that we'll carry through our days, just like babyboomers who grew up in the Vietnam and Watergate era, now in their mid-to-late fifties, are distinctly more Democratic than the age groups around them. Sometimes these things really stick.

By pandering to religious groups that are anti-gay and anti-immigrant, the GOP is slowly sipping cyanide. The only denominations that consistently support Republican candidates are white Evangelical Protestants (by a big margin), white Mainline Protestants (by a small margin), and white non-Hispanic Catholics (by a small margin) - all notable for being white. And aging. The Tea Party, similarly, is 79% white and only 22% of its supporters are under 35.

America will be majority non-white by 2042, according to some projections. By then, the country will also be majority born-after-1980, according to any projection. To maintain their congregations, churches need to recruit immigrants and the young, and to recruit immigrants and the young, their politics will have to shift leftward. And the Republican Party, if it's to stay the party of God, will have to follow them. If it doesn't, non-white believers and independent-minded youth will punch Dem at the ballot box and pray to the God that won't smite them for it.

?True Blood?s Joe Manganiello Does ?Muscle & Fitness? Magazine

We are just one week away from the season 4 premiere of True Blood on HBO and to remind you just how HOT the show is, let me present to you photos of Joe Manganiello (who plays the hottie werewolf Alcide on the show) on the cover and in the pages of Muscle & Fitness magazine. Now M&F mag has absolutely nothing at all to do with True Blood but the mag features Manganiello naked from the waist up and, trust me, it?s a sight to behold. Check out below Joe?s Muscle & Fitness cover, some excerpts from his coverstory and some photos from his workout photospread.

When producers tapped Joe Manganiello for the role of Alcide Herveaux, an Alabama contractor who happens to be a werewolf, the 6?5? actor had three months to prepare before filming. Since the Mt. Lebanon, PA, native laid the foundation for his current Hollywood success in the weight room, Manganiello was more than up for the challenge. As one of the few actors working in Hollywood with a physique worthy of an action star, the response from his female fans keeps him motivated. ?I had a friend of mine call me and (Read more...)

J.Lo might prefer hubby Marc Anthony over Randy and Steven

Jennifer Lopez is reportedly 'superexcited' about the prospect of working on a show with husband Marc Anthony, a talent competition based on Latin American singing talents.

Chris Pizzello/AP

Jennifer Lopez is reportedly 'superexcited' about the prospect of working on a show with husband Marc Anthony, a talent competition based on Latin American singing talents.

It's not "Jenny From the Block" these days - it's J.Lo "on the fence."

That's how Jennifer Lopez described her feelings about returning to "American Idol" Thursday morning in a BBC Radio interview.

The question is whether J.Lo is expressing ambivalence because she's focused on getting a new show or more dough.

"I haven't been forced to make a decision [about returning to the show] and I'm glad about that," Lopez told the UK radio network. "I loved it, but I have a lot of other things happening, and it's going to come down to me making a choice of what I want to do for the next year."

Lopez, who signed up for only a single season of the Fox series, announced in April that she had joined forces with "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller to shop around a different kind of singing competition with hubby Marc Anthony entitled "Que Viva!: The Chosen."

The international show, which will be shot in three languages, will focus on undiscovered singing talent in Latin American countries.

Although the production schedule of "American Idol" would probably enable Lopez to do both series, a source close to the luscious Latina says the project with Anthony will take priority over any obligations with "Idol."

According to the insider, Lopez and her husband are "superexcited" about "Que Viva!" and hope it will be the revamp for Anthony's career that "A.I." was for Lopez's.

Her association with "Idol" provided some synergistic promotion for "On the Floor," her first big hit in years, and also got her named People magazine's "Most Beautiful Woman 2011."

Unlike "Idol," where Lopez is just an employee, the source says "Que Viva!" will be her bebe: She'll get much more creative control. She also feels the Latin market is "huge" now.

Most important, the source says, "Que Viva!" will enable "the whole family" to "be on the same schedule."

An "Idol" insider offers a more skeptical view: J.Lo wants more money.

Though the singer earned a reported $12 million for her "Idol" gig, the source says threatening to leave "Idol" could prompt producers to sweeten her deal. (The source close to J.Lo says that's not the case.)

The "Idol" insider did say if Jennifer does depart, it won't be easy to fill her shoes: "The audience loves her, and she's been great for ratings."

And the ratings have been great for her career.

Sade kicks off first U.S. tour in a decade

By Korina Lopez, USA TODAY

Bringin' it to Baltimore: American fans haven't seen the British singer perform in 10 years, but she looked like she hadn't aged a day, stepping out on stage wearing a black turtleneck, black pants and her signature red lipstick. More important, her voice also hadn't aged a day. She was calm, gracious and elegant, proving that she's ready for her return to the stage. The packed arena roared as she kicked off her set with the title track to her 2010 album, Soldier of Love. Big, burly men and glammed-up ladies sang along with an infectious, childlike enthusiasm.

  • Sade kept her wardrobe changes simple, starting in black pants and sheer turtleneck and ending in an elegant white gown with a peekaboo red bra.

By Matt Kent, WireImage

Sade kept her wardrobe changes simple, starting in black pants and sheer turtleneck and ending in an elegant white gown with a peekaboo red bra.

The simple approach: These days, pop stars strutting the stage in barely-there thongs and doing crotch-grabbing routines are common. So it was refreshing to see a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice just simply singing. "It's just beautiful, honest music," says Richard Sawyers of Washington. Sade's performance of Pearls was one of the most stunning numbers of the night ? just her and her voice on stage.

A little elaboration: As beautiful as Sade is, she needed more to fill out the stage at First Mariner Arena in Baltimore. And her people did. Her elaborate stage sets included a feast for the eyes. During All About Our Love, an archival video montage of the band touring over the years added power to the song. A Broadway-worthy city scenescape underscored the lonely, seedy feeling of Smooth Operator. A dancer silhouetted behind a white screen gave a thrilling performance. For MorningBird, a gauzy, white scrim surrounded Sade as she sang. When the gauze was pulled away, she stepped out in an elegant, sequined white gown, breaking into a powerful King of Sorrow.

Welcome back, Sade: In her long absence from the stage and the studio, Sade's music had begun to melt into the background as "mood music." Playing No Ordinary Love was a go-to on a date, and Smooth Operator is an oft-used karaoke tune. Her triumphant return to the stage is sure to reinvigorate fans' faith in her. Don't give up; she's still got plenty left to give.

Britney Spears Swings Through San Jose

Pushing forth with her "Femme Fatale" tour, Britney Spears took the stage for a performance at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California on Saturday night (June 18).

Clad in her typical risque ensembles, the 29-year-old pop princess opened things up with a video clip showing her on the run from the law as she then appeared onstage while bursting into her hit single "Hold It Against Me".

Miss Spears continued along while treating the packed house to tunes including "Drop Dead Beautiful," "If You Seek Amy" and "Boys" to name a few.

Clearly pleased with the night's concert, Britney tweeted at show's end, "My ears are RINGING San Jose! You guys were SO loud! Thanks for all the love. On my way home to LA LA LAND. U ready? -Britney"

Slated to perform a sure-to-be star-studded show at Staples Center on Monday night (June 20), Spears also has announced that she'll be releasing the music video for "I Wanna Go" this Wednesday, as she posted on her Twitter page, "Shame on me to need release! I-I-I-Wanna-G-O-O-O video comes out June 22nd."

Breaking it down for you, one piece of dire news at a time from our celebcentric world...

CHANGE OF PLANS: Crystal Harris skipped out on Hugh Hefner five days before their wedding, which was supposed to be today, so obviously there won't be a show about it, either. She later explained that it wasn't "the right thing" for her to do and that the split was "mutual." After watching the film, Hef was inspired and slapped a "Runaway Bride" sticker on the next issue of Playboy, featuring "Mrs. Crystal Hefner"...But not to fear, for the pajama'd one is never really alone. Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett, Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt all sent their love, supportive Playmates of all sorts turned out for movie night, and now it looks as if twins Karissa and Kristina Shannon are moving back in!

CUTTING EDGE: Last week a slip, this week a snip. Kim Kardashian trimmed her hair and you all thought it was a major big deal. (Trust us, even those of you who don't think you thought that did think it.) And it's not surprising to see her registered at Gearys of Beverly Hills, but tying the knot on Halloween? Trick-or-treat, indeed! Meanwhile, the Kardashian sisters got lucky in court, Khloé Kardashian Odom may be getting ready to exact some bachelorette party revenge on her sister and Kendall Jenner's after her own spotlight on the next Keeping Up With the Kardashians

P.S.: Taylor Momsen picked up the slip slack this week.

2PAC RESURRECTION: Tupac Shakur has been dead for 15 years, but that didn't stop a jailed murderer from coming forward and confessing to being in on shooting and robbing the rapper in 1994. Dexter Isaac claims music exec James Rosemond hired him to do the crime, but Rosemond's attorney fired back immediately, questioning why anyone would believe a "convicted psychotic killer" like Isaac.

RUN THROUGH: Game of Thrones mighty one Sean Bean was stabbed with a piece of glass after confronting a passerby who made a lewd comment about his girlfriend while the two were outside having a smoke in front of Camden's Hill Bar and Brasserie in London. He refused a trip to the hospital, because he's macho like that.

VOTE: Don't forget to get in your picks for the winners of the 2011 Tater Top Awards

HE TRIED: Anthony Weiner started the week by checking into treatment to battle his Internet issues, but ended it by resigning from his House post after 11 years in congress. And you know that whenever someone efs up, Howard 100 News is there. And, apparently, so is Gina Lee.

CLASS ACT: Jesse James is still planning to marry Kat Von D, but the tabloids can Lick His Balls...

MAKING AMENDS: Tracy Morgan, who somehow is closer to an EGOT now, met with youth at an LGBT homeless center in NYC, looking to prove he's not a nasty homophobe, as his comedy would make him sound.

OUCH: Bar Refaeli is nursing a broken arm...Tori Spelling blasts the paparazzi after running her car into a wall (don't worry, her SUV was much taller than the wall) at her kids' school...

MEAT BYPRODUCTS: Lady Gaga's meat dress has been installed at the Rock and Roll Fall of Fame in Cleveland...Kelsey Grammer says he didn't mean to send an email comparing Camille to beef jerky.

BODY POLITIC: LeAnn Rimes took to her blog because she needed more than 140 characters to discuss why the public needs to get over its obsession with how thin or not-thin certain people are, because that sort of scrutiny can be especially detrimental to people with eating disorders. Meanwhile, Miss Hanes Her Way also denies having a sextape with Dean Sheremet.

TEEN MAMA DRAMA: Amber Portwood was hospitalized after Gary Shirley called 911 and voiced fear that his ex was depressed and might kill herself, though her brother thinks it was her baby daddy who caused the despair. No one knows for sure the state Portwood was in, but the cops say she was uninjured when they showed up. She's out of the hospital now, and fellow Teen Moms are lending their support.
