3 women reportedly bound with duct tape, robbed at their Van Nuys home

VAN NUYS - Three men armed with semi-automatic handguns broke into a Van Nuys home today, tied up the three women inside and ransacked the residence, stealing about $10,000 in cash and jewelry, authorities said.

Police were called to the home in the 13900 block of Archwood Street about 3:40 a.m. The occupants were tied up, apparently with duct tape, while the suspects searched the home, according to police, who said one of the women was taken to a hospital for treatment of a head laceration.

The woman and her friend, both ages 65-plus, and her daughter were all held together in a first floor room. Police said they needed a Russian translator to explain the victims' accounts of the crime.

The suspects spilled quarts of motor oil throughout the ground floor of the two-story home, Los Angeles Police Detective Glenn O'Shea said.

The suspects -- described as 25 to 30 years old, wearing black masks and black clothing and carrying handguns -- had fled the home by the time officers arrived, Los Angeles police Lt. Andy Neiman said.

The daughter, who is about 36, managed to escape and call police from a neighbor's home, O'Shea said. He said there was no evidence to suggest that the suspects and victims knew each other.

Food Allergies In Kids: More Common, More Severe Than Previously Thought

Cristina Stainkamp, 42, a stay-at-home mother of three, describes how terrifying it was when her first child, then 18-months, went into anaphylactic shock from a single drop of milk.

"In a matter of minutes, he was covered in hives head to toe," she told The Huffington Post. "His eyes were like slits, swollen shut; his ears were like Dumbo, swollen and purple; and his lips were turning blue." Her son was vomiting and couldn't breathe and had to be rushed to the hospital where an ER doctor saved his life.

Life-threatening reactions to something as seemingly benign as milk may be more common than previously thought, according to a new study out today showing that food allergies affect 8 percent of American children. The study also finds that nearly 40 percent of children who suffer from a food allergy have a history of severe reactions.

"We used to think food allergies affected 1 in 25 kids," said Mary Jane Marchisotto, executive director of The Food Allergy Initiative, which provided funding for the study. "This shows it's more like 1 in 12 or 13. So it's a very large and growing problem that needs to be addressed."

Writing in the journal Pediatrics, researchers provided the results of a survey filled out on behalf of approximately 40,000 children under the age of 18 across the U.S. Among the 8 percent who suffered from food allergies, peanut allergies were found to be the most common, followed by milk and shellfish. Reactions were also more likely to be severe in kids with tree nut or peanut allergies and among children with multiple allergies.

Jill Mindlin, 45, an attorney whose daughter, Maya, 12, is allergic to milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame and shellfish, said they learned about Maya's allergies by "trial by fire." Indeed, before her daughter was even three years old, she had several anaphylactic reactions, which occur when the body overreacts to foreign substances, releasing a flood of chemicals that cause drops in blood pressure and the narrowing of airways.

"It's terrifying," Mindlin said. "And there is a learning curve. We weren't as prepared as we should have been." Now, like many parents whose lives are transformed by food allergies, she has become an activist who heads into her daughter's school to help teach kids and teachers about food allergies.

In addition to being among the first to track the prevalence of severe food allergies, the new study also looked at issues its authors say raise more questions that require additional research to fully understand. They found, for example, that African-American and Asian children are more likely to have food allergies, but that white children are more likely to receive a diagnosis. The researchers also found that 30 percent of the food allergy sufferers suffered from multiple allergies.

But perhaps the biggest question the new study raises is whether or not food allergies are actually on the rise.

Dr. Scott H. Sicherer, a researcher at the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai in New York and author of "Understanding and Managing Your Child's Food Allergies," says the study suggests they are, but cautions that a better way to determine that is to conduct a similar study over a period of time.

One possible explanation for any increase is the so-called hygiene hypothesis, which suggests that clean living, something Sicherer described as "smaller families passing around fewer infections and not living on farms with exposure to various bacteria," results in our bodies attacking harmless proteins. He cited additional possible hypotheses, like changes in how foods are processed and whether or not babies are fed allergenic foods too early or too late in life.

But whatever the reasons, this new study suggests that the health impact of food allergies is real and troubling.

"This study underscores the need for more research on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of this common disease," Sicherer said.

According to Marchisotto of the Food Allergies Initiative, it also highlights the need for more sympathy.

"We need more compassion for the kids and families that are going through this, and not to just think there are a bunch of wacko parents out there who are overreacting," she said. "Some people out there just don't understand that the challenges that a food allergy presents every day."

Joanne Wilson Meets BlogHer Founder Lisa Stone

Of course I knew about Blogher, how could I not?  I have been watching them grow over the past six years.  It is surprising that it took this long before I finally got to sit down with Lisa Stone, one of the founders, last week for the first time as our one degree of separation is pretty small.

Lisa was raised in Missoula, Montana that had a population of about 40,000 when she was growing up.   Like many communities, the population has grown and Missoula is much different now.  As Lisa put it, the biggest export out of Montana is probably the youth.

She left too and shocked her family by getting into Wellesley College, one of the most prestigious women's colleges in the country.

While she was in college, she went to visit her sister at Stanford University and realized that she was much more suited to the West coast.  After graduating, she moved to the Bay area and has yet to leave except for a short hiatus.  She got a job at a management consulting company working in fuel futures.  Learning about fuel and the areas of Europe that she was focused on lit an interest in her to become a journalist.

She left consulting and found herself at the Oakland Tribune.

At the Tribune she wrote and broke a series of articles about the FAA's lack of preparedness for an emergency.

This got on CNN's radar and they recruited Lisa to work for them.  She was four months pregnant when Mark Carter hired her.  Carter was the chief strategist for CNN at that point and is now the Executive Director of the Committee of Concerned Journalists.  Lisa was at CNN when the Time Warner merger happened and everything changed.

Lisa was 30 years old, had been married eight years and had a one year old.  She left CNN and her marriage and went online.  She bartered her skills to work at Webtv so she could learn.  Lisa ended up at Woman.com where she launched a variety of sites from fun to serious.  Then Woman.com was bought by iVillage.com

The whole woman's space was trying to find their place and roll-ups were happening in all verticals.  I lived through that era too.

It was 2001 and Lisa became a Neiman Fellow at Harvard where they had yet to have an internet journalist accepted into the program.   She spent the first six months of the program at MIT watching games and the second half at Harvard analyzing business models to leverage this new tech world.

Once the year ended she returned to the Bay area.  Lisa started working in social media, took a job with Law.com where she developed a sponsored network that got really high cpm's.  On the side she was blogging for the LATimes so she could keep honing her journalism skills.  People kept asking her at this point, it was 2004/5, where do all the woman blog?

So in 2005, Lisa and her two partners who she met through the internet world, Elisa Camahort Page and Jory Des Jardins, launched Blogher.

I love the story of how the name came to be.  Lisa was working for Jennifer Collins at Law.com.  She told Jennifer what she was going to create a site dedicated to a community of women that would be a place where women could publish/blog.  They were struggling with the name.  Sheblogs?  Jennifer, in one second, said Blogher.  And so Blogher was born.

In 2011, Blogher is the fifth largest women's network.  They get 12-26 unique visitors a month depending on which analytic site you believe (Nielsen of Comscore).  My gut feeling is that is it somewhere in between.

They are creating a new way for women to write and get paid for their influence and words.

The verticals are wide from Green to Food to New Media to Money, Sports and Style.  Blogher puts on conferences too.

I loved talking with Lisa.  We could have talked about women and business for hours on end.  It is always great to meet other women who are trying to change the world for women entrepreneurs.  If you haven't checked out Blogher, get on line and take a look.  A growing community where women speak their minds on a daily basis.

This is an article by Joanne Wilson, a The NextWomen contributor.  Joanne's blog can be found here.

Tracy Morgan Meets with Gay Teens in NYC

Tracy Morgan has kept his word.

The comedian, who came under heavy fire for going off on the gay lifestyle during a set in Nashville this month, apologized last week and made plans to meet with teens who had suffered due to their sexuality.

He did just that yesterday.

Tracy Morgan (Tracy Jordan)

During a meeting organized by GLAAD, Morgan spoke with Jayden Love and Raciel Castillo, gay teens who were forced to live on the streets after getting the boot from their families.

"We really appreciate that we were able to meet with Tracy Morgan," the teenagers said. "We hope that our stories have the power to change not only Tracy's perspective, but those of any parent who may be struggling with accepting their child."

Up next, the 30 Rock star will head back to Nashville, apologize to the folks he offended there and meet with the Tennessee Equality Project.
